Hospitals as place builders: economic and social impacts of hospital

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je vysvětlit, jaký prospěch přinesly dvěma regionům OECD (Antofagasta, Chile a Innsbruck, Rakousko) organizace, jako jsou nemocnice, v jejich geografické oblasti. Tento projekt podrobně popisuje, jak tyto organizace různými způsoby přispívají k ekonomice regionu prostřednictvím určitých zainteresovaných stran, kterými jsou v tomto případě studenti a zdravotnický personál a další pracovníci v sektoru zdraví. Tyto příspěvkové organizace byly analyzovány prostřednictvím přístupu „Place Builder“ za pomoci různých proměnných. Zdroje informací potřebné pro jejich interně-externí srovnání regionů a nemocnic byly získány prostřednictvím národních statistických úřadů, jako sekundární zdroj dat a dva průzkumy jako primární zdroj dat. Tento výzkum odhaduje, že příspěvky nemocnice do ekonomiky regionů na základě vybraného vzorku činí až 42,5 mil. EUR ročně, přičemž v regionu zůstává až 97,13%. Doplňkově je také zjištěno, že regiony s nemocnicemi dosahují (v průměru) lepších výsledků než regiony, kde se nemocnice neprojevují jako produktivnější, s lepšími výkony v ukazatelích, jako je nezaměstnanost, absence ze zdravotních důvodů, průměrný plat a dostupný zdravotnický personál.

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to explain how two different OECD’s regions (Antofagasta, Chile and Innsbruck, Austria) have benefited by having organizations such as Hospitals in their geographic location. This project details how these organizations contribute in different ways to the region’s economy through certain stakeholders that in this case are health-related students and professionals. These contributory organizations were analysed through the ‘Place builder’s management approach to determine the different variables perform an integral comparison about. The sources of information required for their internal-external comparison of regions and hospital were retrieved through national statistical offices, as secondary data source and two surveys as primary data source. Finally, this research estimates that the contributions of the hospital to the economy, based on the selected sample, sums up to 42.5€ Mio/year where up to 97,13% remains in the region. Complementary, it is also identified that regions with hospitals performs (in average) better than regions without hospitals showing themselves as more productive are with better performance on indicators such as unemployment, days-off due medical license, average salary, and available medical staff.
