The effects of computer activities ondepressivity among adolescents.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkoumáním struktury trávení volného času na elektronických zařízeních a možnou souvislostí se zvýšenou depresivitou adolescentů. Teoretická část práce se zabývá problematikou deprese a depresivity a adolescence s celou škálou vývojových změn, ke kterým v tomto období dochází. Teoretická část se dále dotýká možných negativních dopadů technologického pokroku na mentální zdraví adolescentů. Důraz je kladen na syntézu dosavadních poznatků ve zmíněných oblastech. Empirická část popisuje průběh a výsledky samotného šetření. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 161 adolescentů, 111 dívek a 50 chlapců, ve věku 12-17 let. Účastníkům byl administrován online dotazník zaměřující se na volnočasové aktivity adolescentů na elektronických zařízeních vypracovaný speciálně pro účely této studie a dále nezkrácená sebeposuzovací škála depresivity pro děti (Childrens Depressive Inventory, CDI). Na základě statistické analýzy získaných dat byla nalezena mírná korelace mezi množstvím času stráveného na sociálních sítích, kvalitou mezilidských vztahů a zvýšenou depresivitou adolescentů. Vliv hraní počítačových her na depresivitu se neprokázal.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis looks into the structure of how young people spend their free time mainly on electronic devices and its possible connection to increased level of depressive symptomatology. The theoretical part looks into the topics of depression and depressivity, adolescence with its wide range accompanying developmental changes, as well as possible negative impacts of technology on mental health of adolescents. It provides overview of current knowledge with the emphasis on synthesis of the above-mentioned areas. The empirical part then describes the research process and its results. The research sample consists of 161 adolescents, 111 girls and 50 boys, aged 12–17. They were given an online questionnaire specifically made for the purpose of this study with the focus on their leisure activities and usage of electronic devices, and complete Children’s Depressive Inventory (CDI). Based on the statistical analysis of obtained data a mild correlation was found between the amount of time spent on social media, the quality of relationships and increased depressivity. The effect of playing computer games on depressivity has not been proven.
