Abstract:

Spojené státy americké byly založeny na predstave, že se z ní co nejdřív stane velomoc. Svoboda byla dosžena jako první, a v boji se tekl krev na nádhernou krajinu. Uprostřed tohoto zmatku stál fotograf. Díky jeho úsilí se události války dostaly k veřejnosti s bezprecedentní přesností, a do domovů byla přivezena výjimečná země. Týto fotografie o nezmapovaní země podporovali lidí, aby tlačili hranici na západ, zatímco se snažili být uznáváni jako skuteční umělci. Fotografové dokumentovali útrapy Velké hospodářské krize a pochodovali do bitev druhé světové války vedle vojáků. Jejich osobní vize a umělecké volby ovlivnily, jak svět tyto události vnímal. Tato práce analyzuje, jak klíčové historické události mezi implementací fotografie a dozráváním fotožurnalistiky se objevili v obrázcích. Dále jsou analyzovány účinky těchto událostí na vývoj jedné z nejvlivnějších kultur, aby se odhalily rozdíly mezi představou o světě a skutečnými událostmi. Kardinálními prvky této práce jsou vybraní fotografové, kteří pracovali a rozvíjeli základy krajinářské a dokumentární fotografie, například, Matthew Brady, Timothy O'Sullivan, Ansel Adams, W. Eugene Smith a Robert Frank.

Abstract:

Established as a country destined for greatness, America has strived to achieve this goal as soon as possible. Liberty was established and fought for and the blood was spilled on the magnificent landscape and in the middle of this turmoil stood the photographer. Through his efforts, the events of the war reached the public with unprecedented accuracy and the uncharted land was brought into the homes. They fuelled the spirits of people to push the frontier westward while struggling to be recognised as true artists. Photographers documented the hardships of The Great Depression and marched into battles of the second World War alongside the soldiers. Their personal vision and artistic choices influenced how the world perceived these events. This thesis analyses how key historic events between the implementation of photography and the maturing of photojournalism have been portrayed. Furthermore the effects of these events on the development of one of the most influential cultures are analysed to reveal the discrepancies between the image presented to the world and the actual events. The cardinal elements of this thesis are selected photographers who followed the traditions of landscape and documentary photography, including, Matthew Brady, Timothy O’Sullivan, Ansel Adams, W. Eugene Smith and Robert Frank.
