A Comparison of Chinese and American Media Reactions to the North Korean Nuclear Program in 2022

Abstract:

Cílem práce je srovnání, jakým způsobem média reagují na severokorejský jaderný program, a to konkrétně ve Spojených státech amerických a v Čínské lidové republice. Práce proto odpovídá na tyto výzkumné otázky: Který z pěti rámců dle teorie Entmana 1991 nejvíce využívají čínská a americká média? Které z těchto rámců mají tendenci upřednostňovat určitá témata a jiná naopak dávat do pozadí? Jaké jsou hlavní rozdíly mezi jednotlivými styly vyjadřování médií? V souladu s cílem a otázkami práce využívá metody komparace a kvalitativní obsahové analýzy, která je založena na rámcích a rysech Entmanovy teorie rámování. První část (1. kapitola) představuje teoreticko-metodologické východisko práce. Druhá část (2., 3. a 4. kapitola) je analýza vyjadřování čínského média – China Daily, a amerického média – The Washington Post, ve vztahu k severokorejskému jadernému programu, a jejich následné srovnání. Práce dochází k závěru, že přestože se deníky na první pohled liší, na severokorejský jaderný program v roce 2022 dle stylu vyjadřování reagují podobným způsobem, avšak se liší v obsahu, o kterém píší.

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to compare how the media react to the North Korean nuclear program, specifically in the United States of America and the People's Republic of China. The study thus addresses the following research questions: Which of the five frames according to Entman's 1991 theory are most utilized by Chinese and American media? Which of these frames tend to prioritize certain themes and push others into the background? What are the main differences between the expression styles of the media? In accordance with the aim and questions of the study, it employs methods of comparison and qualitative content analysis, based on the frames and traits of Entman's framing theory. The first part (Chapter 1) introduces the theoretical and methodological framework of the study. The second part (Chapters 2, 3, and 4) analyzes the expression of the Chinese media - China Daily, and the American media - The Washington Post, in relation to the North Korean nuclear program, followed by their comparison. The study concludes that although the newspapers may seem different at first glance, they react to the North Korean nuclear program in 2022 in a similar manner in terms of expression style, but differ in the content they cover.
