Technical Analysis of the Stock Market and its Trends

Abstract:

Institute Finance, accounting and insurance. Thesis Supervisor: Ing. Marián Tóti, PhD. Year of completion: 2013. Number of pages: 72. Technical analysis is a method of analysis of the assets, which aims to forecast the future development of their prices through a variety of technical methods. Technical analysis is based on published market data, and its attention is focused on the timing of the trade. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the nature of technical analysis of stock market, its components and the development trends influenced by the information technology and financial crisis. Based on the performed analysis by using different methods of technical analysis on the three indices DAX, FTSE and DJIA in the period before, during and after the crisis, it was concluded, that the best trading results using technical analysis indicators have been achieved in the post-crisis period. Moving average proved to be best indicator regardless of the period. Indicator RSI and Bollinger Bands were evaluated during the crisis as not working. After the crisis, during which technical analysis did not produce the desired results, the predictive ability of technical analysis indicators improved. Presumably, the crisis that caused the bursting of the bubble, helped to restore market efficiency, and also it is one of the reasons why technical analysis had shown improved predictive ability after this period.

Katedra Financií, účtovníctva a poisťovníctva. Vedúci diplomovej práce: Ing. Marián Tóti, PhD. Rok obhajoby: 2013. Počet strán: 72. Technická analýza predstavuje spôsob analýzy aktív, ktorej cieľom je predikcia budúceho vývoja ich cien prostredníctvom rôznych technických metód. Technická analýza je založená na publikovaných trhových údajoch, pričom pozornosť technickej analýzy je sústredená na načasovanie obchodu. Cieľom diplomovej práce je zhodnotenie podstaty technickej analýzy akciového trhu, jej súčastí a vývojových tendencií pod vplyvom rozvoja informačných technológií a finančnej krízy. Na základe uskutočnenej analýzy použitím rôznych metód technickej analýzy na troch indexoch DAX, FTSE a DJIA v období pred, počas a po kríze, bol vyvodený záver, že najlepšie výsledky obchodovania pomocou indikátorov technickej analýzy boli dosiahnuté v období po kríze. Najlepším indikátorom sa ukázal byť bez ohľadu na obdobie kĺzavý priemer. Indikátor RSI ako aj Bollingerove pásmo boli vyhodnotené počas krízy ako nefunkčné. Po kríze, počas ktorej technická analýza nepriniesla požadované výsledky, sa zlepšila predikčná schopnosť indikátorov technickej analýzy. Možno predpokladať, že kríza, ktorá spôsobila spľasnutie bubliny, pomohla k obnove efektívnosti trhov, a aj to je jeden z dôvodov prečo technická analýza mala po tomto období lepšiu predikčnú schopnosť.
