Effects of the coronavirus pandemic on life insurance market in Czech Republic in 2020

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dopady pandemie koronaviru na trh s životním pojištěním v České republice v roce 2020. Konktrétně zkoumá, na základě čeho se jedinci během pandemie rozhodovali o koupi pojištění, za využití ekonomických teorií o vlivu přírodních katastrof na pojistný trh a dalších faktorech ovlivňujících poptávku po životním pojištění. Cílem práce je ověření hypotézy, že koronavirová krize zvýšila předepsané pojistné a počet smluv. Práce obsahuje data reálného vývoje pozorovaných ukazatelů. Kauzální vztah mezi pandemií koronaviru a provedenými změnami v životním pojištění je založen na datech dotazníkového šetření a je zkoumán pomocí analýzy ekonomických teorií prostřednictvím kontingenčních tabulek. Zjištěné závěry jsou doplněny o názor odborníků z praxe. Z analýzy je potvrzena závislost mezi zakládáním životního pojištění nebo zvyšováním pojistného a pociťováním strachu z koronaviru, prožitím úmrtí blízké osoby na covid-19 nebo vnímáním pandemie jako příležitosti. Dále je potvrzeno, že lidé rušili smlouvy životního pojištění nebo snižovali pojistné, pokud obdrželi sociální pomoc od státu, nebo jim v době pandemie poklesl příjem. Vztah se neprokázal mezi životním pojištěním a těžkým průběhem onemocnění covid-19, mezi životním pojištěním a častým sledováním vývoje pandemie v médiích a v poslední řadě nebyla potvrzena závislost mezi životním pojištěním a pocitem občanů, že se značně zhoršila politická situace v ČR. Na základě dat z pojistného trhu a potvrzeného kauzálního vztahu je verifikována první část hypotézy, že koronavirová krize zvýšila předepsané pojistné. Druhá část hypotézy je falzifikována na základě zjištění negativního působení některých faktorů na poptávku po životním pojištění a na základě reálného poklesu smluv v roce 2020.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyses the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the life insurance market in the Czech Republic in 2020. Considering economic theories on the impact of natural disasters on the insurance market and other factors affecting the demand for life insurance, this thesis researches into motivation of the individuals who decided to buy insurance during the pandemic. The aim is to verify the hypothesis that the coronavirus crisis increased set premiums and the number of insurance policies. The thesis presents data of a real development of the observed indicators. The causal link between the pandemic and changes in life insurance is based on questionnaire survey data and the research is done by means of the analysis of economic theories through contingency tables. The findings are supplemented by expert opinions.The analysis confirms the relation between taking out life insurance or increasing premiums and fear of coronavirus, experiencing the death of a close person of covid-19, or perceiving the pandemic as an opportunity. Furthermore, the conclusions show that people cancelled life insurance or reduced premiums if they benefited state social support, or their income decreased during the pandemic. No connection was proven between life insurance and the severe course of covid-19, nor between life insurance and frequent monitoring of the pandemic in the media. There was also no revealed dependence between life insurance and a feeling that the political situation had significantly deteriorated. The first part of the hypothesis that the coronavirus crisis increased set premiums is verified on the ground of data from the insurance market and the confirmed causal relation. The second part of the hypothesis is falsified both due to the findings of a negative effect of some factors on the demand for life insurance and a real decline in the number of policies in 2020.
