Exploratory geographical analysis of health data and its cartographical presentation

Abstract:

Předložená disertační práce se zabývá možnostmi využití kartografie a geoinformatiky ve zdravotnictví a to především pro prezentaci a explorační analýzu statistik zdravotního stavu a zdravotní péče. Současné statistiky odhalují některé nebezpečné trendy zdravotního stavu české populace, které by se mohly stát velmi závažným problémem již v blízkém budoucnu. S tím souvisí potřeba analyzovat současnou situaci, tvořit predikce do budoucích let a propagovat nutná opatření pro veřejnost. Pro všechny tyto činnosti je možno s výhodou použít mapu nebo GIS. Pro prezentaci zdravotních statistik pro veřejnost jsou mapy vhodné, protože dokáží zaujmout čtenáře. Mapa je vhodná i pro analýzu zdravotních dat, neboť v prostředí mapy či v GIS lze provádět analýzy jak v prostoru tak v čase. Existují dokonce jednoduché interaktivní kartografické nástroje, které umožňují i laikům bez hlubších znalostí statistiky či GIS provádět některé jednoduché analýzy zdravotních dat. S využitím všech těchto možností nabízených kartografií se lze setkat u mezinárodních a zahraničních poskytovatelů dat, zejména pak v USA. V ČR však zatím nejsou zmíněné možnosti nabízené kartografií a geoinformatikou dostatečně využívány. Tato práce má ambici přispět ke změně tohoto stavu. Z toho vyplynuly rešeršní i praktické cíle disertační práce. Obsah teoretické části práce lze shrnout do několika bodů: • Byl popsán historický vývoj a současný stav zdravotní kartografie. • Byla provedena rešerše a zhodnocení zdrojů dostupných zdravotních dat, jak na národní tak na mezinárodní úrovni. • Byla provedena rešerše národních a mezinárodních zdrojů poskytujících zdravotní mapy. Byla též hodnocena kvalita dostupných map a způsob, jakým jsou uživatelům poskytovány. • Byla provedena rešerše a zhodnocení možností dostupných nástrojů explorační kartografie využitelných pro zdravotní statistiky. Disertační práce vznikla v rámci projektů Medicarto a Visualhealth, řešených na Geografickém ústavu Přírodovědecké fakulty Masarykovy univerzity. Autor práce byl členem řešitelských týmů obou projektů, týkajících se využívání map ve zdravotnictví. Praktická část práce se zaměřuje na popis a výsledky činnosti autora na projektech: • Byl vyvinut interaktivní kartografický nástroj pro prezentaci a analýzu časových řad TimeSeries. Byl využit na portálu Visualhealth (http://zdravi.geogr.muni.cz), který se zaměřuje na prezentaci oficiálních zdravotních statistik ČR formou map. Nástroj TimeSeries byl publikován coby autorizovaný software. • Byly vyvinuty a testovány také další nástroje pro prezentaci zdravotních statistik. V závěrečné kapitole práce je popsán předpokládaný vývoj zdravotní kartografie do budoucna. Jsou zde uvedena doporučení, jak zajistit rozvoj zdravotní kartografie v ČR. Disertační práce vznikla za podpory grantu GA ČR č. 205/07/1278 „Kartografická vizualizace a modelování současných trendů vývoje zdravotního stavu a zdravotní péče v ČR“ (Medicarto) a grantu MŠMT č. 2E08028 „Vizualizace zdravotních dat pro podporu interdisciplinárního vzdělávání a vztahů s veřejností“ (Visualhealth).

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis deals with possibilities of using cartography and geoinformatics in health service system, especially for presentation and exploratory analysis of health status and health care statistics. Contemporary statistics show some dangerous trends in the health status of the Czech population. It is possible that these trends become a serious problem in the near future. An analysis of the contemporary situation, predictions for future and informing the general public about necessary precautions are required in this situation. Maps and/or GIS can be used successfully for all mentioned needs. Maps are ideal for health statistics presentation for the general public because they can attract user’s attention. Maps and/or GIS are also useful for health data analyses – it is possible to analyse situation in space as well as in time. There are also simple interactive cartographic tools that allow users without experience in using GIS or statistics to make some simple statistical analyses of health data. All these possibilities of cartography are used by many international and foreign data providers, especially in the USA. However, the above-mentioned possibilities of cartography and geoinformatics are not sufficiently used in the Czech Republic. This dissertation should help change this situation. This implicates objectives of the information-search part as well as the practical part of the presented dissertation. Content of the theoretical part can be summarized in the following points: • The historical evolution and contemporary status of health cartography were reviewed. • Available sources of health data (both national and international) were described and evaluated. • National and international sources of health maps were described. Quality of available maps and methods of their providing to users were evaluated. • Available tools of exploratory cartography that can be used for work with health data were evaluated. This dissertation was created within the frame of research projects Medicarto and Visualhealth that were solved at the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. The author of this dissertation was a member of both project teams. The projects were focused on using maps in health service system. The practical part of the dissertation describes author’s work on mentioned projects and achieved results: • The interactive cartographical tool TimeSeries for statistical time series presentation and analysis was developed. It was used in web portal Visualhealth (http://zdravi.geogr.muni.cz) focused on cartographical presentation of official Czech health statistics. The TimeSeries tool was published as authorised software. • Other tools for health data presentation were developed and tested. Expected progress of health cartography in the future is described in the last chapter of this dissertation. Some recommendations are also mentioned to ensure advancement of health cartography in the Czech Republic.
