Impact of sport megaevents on the urban development.

Abstract:

Velké sportovní události neboli mega eventy jsou v současné době považovány za jeden z možných nástrojů pro úspěšný rozvoj hostitelských měst. Pořádající města očekávají, že mega eventy zanechají trvalá dědictví v podobě nové dopravní a technické infrastruktury, nového zázemí pro turismus a volnočasových aktivit, lepší mezinárodní image. Ne vždy se však jejich očekávání naplní a místo toho se pořádající města potýkají s problémem nevyužitých sportovních areálů, předražených stavebních zakázek, korupcí, nespokojeností občanů, kteří byli nuceni se přesídlit ze svých domovů do jiných částí měst, tak, aby uvolnili místo pro výstavbu nové infrastruktury. Tato diplomová práce uvádí na základě rešerše literatury a dostupných zdrojů v teoretické části práci přehled definic mega eventů a seznam možných ekonomických, sociálních, infrastrukturních, politických a environmentálních dopadů na rozvoj města. Dále pak ukazuje na vybraných příkladech z uplynulých olympijských her v Barceloně, Athénách a v Londýně, jak se pořádající města na olympijské hry připravovala a jaké dopady mělo pořádání těchto událostí na rozvoj města a jejich obyvatele. V empirické části práce byly na základě rešerše internetových zdrojů a vlastního pozorování hodnoceny aktuální dopady posledních letních olympijských her v Rio de Janeiru.

Abstract:

Large sports events or mega events are currently considered as one of the possible factors for the successful development of the host cities. Host cities expect that mega events leave a permanent legacy in the form of a new transport and technical infrastructure, new facilities for tourism and leisure activities, better international image. However, not every expectation are accomplished and host cities are confronted with the problem of unused sports facilities, overpriced construction contracts, and corruption, dissatisfied citizens who were forced to move from their house to other parts of the cities to make space for the construction of new infrastructure. This master thesis shows based on literature research and resources available in the theoretical part of the work list of definitions mega sports events and a list of possible economic, social, infrastructural, political and environmental impacts of the host city development. Further, the thesis shows selected examples from the recent Olympic Games in Barcelona, Athens, and London, how the cities were prepared for the organization the Olympic Games and what impact these events had on the development of cities and their inhabitants. The empirical part was based on internet research and own observation and it assessed with the actual impact of the recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
