Doctors Without Borders: humanitarian aid during the Ebola epidemic in West Africa 2014-2016

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je organizace Lékaři bez hranic a její humanitární pomoc v boji proti ebole v západní Africe v letech 2014-2016. Hlavním cílem bude zjistit, jak Lékaři bez hranic přispěli v boji proti epidemii eboly a také zmapovat jejich činnosti a aktivity. Zároveň se bude věnovat roli mezinárodních organizací v rámci takových zdravotnických krizí a jejich reakcí na vypuknutí epidemie. V práci je zvolena především deskriptivní metoda, ale vyskytuje se zde také analýza, a to v případě aktivit organizace MSF a reakcí z mezinárodního prostředí. Zdroje jsou z velké částí tvořeny zahraniční literaturou, odbornými články a oficiálními webovými stránkami organizací. Teoretická část práce se věnuje neziskovému sektoru a organizacím, které sem spadají. Dále obsahuje charakteristiku mezinárodních nevládních organizací a humanitární pomoci. V praktické části se nachází zmapování situace v západní Africe a analýza aktivit ze strany MSF. V neposlední řadě je zde zkoumána role mezinárodních organizací a jejich reakce na takovou zdravotnickou krizi. Z této práce vyplývá, že hlavním problémem byla opožděná reakce ze strany WHO, která špatně vyhodnotila závažnost situace. Naopak role MSF byla naprosto klíčová a díky této organizaci došlo k včasnému zásahu.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor thesis is organization Doctors Without Borders and thein humanitarion aid during Ebola epidemic in West Africa 2014-2016. The main goal is to determine how Doctors Without Borders contributed to the fight against the Ebola epidemic and also to map their activites. It will also focus on the role of international organizations in such health crises and thein response to the outbreak. There is a descriptive method chosen in the thesis, but there i also an analysis involved, in the case of MSF activites and reactions from the international community. The sources mainly consist of foreign literature, articles and official websites of organizations. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the non-profit sector and organizations that belong there. It also contains a decription of international NGOs and humanitarian aid. The practical part is a mapping of the situation in West Africa and an analysis of acitivities by MSF. Last but not least, the role of international organizations amd thein response to such a crisis is examined there. This thesis shows that the main problem was the delayed reponse from the WHO, which misjudged the gravity of the situation. On the contrary, the role of MSF was absolutely crucial and thanks to this organization there was a timely intervention.
