Media system without a system. Theory of media systems from the viewpoint of system theory: an attempt at reflexive critique.

Abstract:

This dissertation relates to the current development of media system studies and attempts to enrich it with the perspective of systems theory. Till now, the research of media systems concentrated on assembling a wide spectrum of indicators, leaving the key term, media system, without closer inspection. Since the definition and theoretical grounding of the key term is missing, there is no basis for deriving the indicators, what shifts the models into proofless assumptions. We tried to remedy this drawback by applying Bertalanffy´s general systems theory and Luhmann´s social systems theory. From this viewpoint the media system can be seen as an autopoietic (selfreproducing) system existing in the environment of social system, interacting with its other subsystems. Systems theory enriches the media systems research with the point we identified as the main defect of up-to-now studies: theoretical grounding offering a basis for deriving the indicators. Besides this, it overpasses the rather narrow field of media studies and enables us to analyse media system in a broader social context.

Abstract:

Táto práca nadväzuje na doterajší vývoj na poli štúdia mediálnych systémov a pokúša sa obohatiť ho o perspektívu systémovej teórie. Doterajší výskum mediálnych systémov sa sústredil najmä na zhromaždenie čo najširšieho spektra indikátorov, no kľúčový termín, mediálny systém, zostal nepreskúmaný. Keďže chýba definícia a teoretické ukotvenie ústredného pojmu, chýba i základ pre odvodenie indikátorov, čo jednotlivé modely posúva do roviny nepodložených domnienok. Tento nedostatok sme sa snažili napraviť aplikáciou Bertalanffyho všeobecnej systémovej teórie a Luhmannovej teórie sociálnych systémov. Ich optikou sa na mediálny systém môžeme pozrieť ako na autopoietický (sebareprodukujúci sa) systém nachádzajúci sa v prostredí sociálneho systému, interagujúci s jeho ostatnými subsystémami. Systémová teória obohacuje výskum mediálnych systémov o to, čo sme vyhodnotili ako najväčší nedostatok doterajších štúdií: teoretické ukotvenie, ktoré poskytuje oporu pre odvodzovanie indikátorov. Zároveň prekračuje pomerne úzko vymedzený rámec mediálnych štúdií a umožňuje analýzu mediálneho systému v širšom sociálnom kontexte.
