Anomy in 21st century - revisiting the concept

Abstract:

This thesis explores the concept of anomie and its relevance in postmodern times. It aims to answer the question of the relevance of using the concept in the 21st century the same way as it was initially elaborated by Durkheim in late 1800s. The answer to this question is found by comparing the French society of the 19th century where the concept was created with the current Western 21st century society, which uncovers social changes that have occurred over time. In the end of the thesis I evaluate these changes as critical to such extent that for the purpose of using it in postmodern era, which is far too atomized and heterogeneous for the original definition, I suggest redefining the concept. The theoretical concepts that provide ground for the thesis are primarily derived from the work of Émile Durkheim which I put into contrast with the theories of his contemporaries (Marx, Freud, Weber). For the purpose of comparing the above mentioned societies, theories of late modernity are used (Bauman, Beck, Giddens).

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá pojmom anómie a jeho relevanciou v období postmoderny. Za cieľ si kladie zodpovedať otázku, či je v 21. storočí relevantné vracať sa k pojmu anómie takým spôsobom, ako bol konceptualizovaný Durkheimom na konci 19. storočia. Na svoju otázku odpovedám po komparáci spoločnosti 19. storočia vo Francúzsku, kedy pojem vznikol a súčasnej západnej spoločnosti 21. storočia, ktorá odkrýva zmeny, ktoré v spoločnosti nastali. V závere svojej práce hodnotím tieto zmeny ako tak zásadné, že navrhujem redefinovanie pojmu v prípade jeho použitie v postmoderne, ktorá je pre pôvodnú definíciu príliš atomizovaná a heterogénna. Teoretické koncepty, o ktoré sa v práci opieram, vychádzajú primárne z diela Émile Durkheima, ktoré dávam do kontrastu s teóriami jeho súčasníkov (Marx, Freud, Weber). Pri komparácii so súčasnou spoločnosťou využívam teórie neskorej moderny (Bauman, Beck, Giddens).
