Irony in Jane Austen

Abstract:

Jane Austen?s work is characterized by many distinctive features. Irony is considered to be one of them. The thesis aims to investigate this phenomenon in her famous novel that was first published precisely 200 years ago, Pride and Prejudice. After a general examination of the term irony, the main ironic aspects of the novel will be pointed out. The thesis especially focuses on the role of the narrator and the characters in creating and the use of irony, and furthermore on the changing distribution of irony over the course of the narrative. At the end, the issue of Jane Austen?s ability to express the complex vision of the world is also discussed.

Abstract:

Dílo Jane Austenové se vyznačuje mnoha osobitými rysy. Ironie je považována za jeden z nich. Cílem této bakalářské práce je probádat fenomén ironie v jejím slavném románu, který byl poprvé vydán přesně před 200 lety, Pýše a předsudku. Po všeobecném prostudování termínu ironie budou vyzdviženy hlavní ironické aspekty románu. Práce se zaměřuje především na roli vypravěče a charakterů při tvoření a použití ironie a dále měnícím se rozvržením ironie v průběhu děje. Nakonec je prodiskutována také otázka schopnosti Jane Austenové vyjádřit komplexní vidění světa.
