Sentiment and uncertainty within selected assets of the Czech and German market

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis investigates the relationship between sentiment, uncertainty, and selected assets on the Czech and German market. The theoretical part is divided into 2 chapters. The first chapter defines the market sentiment and describes its connection to financial markets and individual investors. It further presents behavioral biases related to sentiment and sentiment measures. The second chapter is devoted to market uncertainty. First, it defines market uncertainty and describes its relationship with market sentiment. Second, it provides a possible link to behavioral finance and evidence of its presence in financial markets. The last part of the second chapter describes market uncertainty measures. The practical part analyses the relationship between sentiment, uncertainty, and value of chosen securities employing the Vector autoregression (VAR). Firstly, we choose the European Sentiment Indicator (ESI) and ZEW Index as proxies for the sentiment. Parallelly, we choose dispersion in analysts’ forecasts as a proxy for uncertainty. Secondly, we create six VAR models related to the aim of the thesis, describe their results, and compare them to one another. Thirdly, we sum up the results, discuss them according to existing literature and make suggestions for future research.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca skúma vzťah medzi sentimentom, neistotou a vybranými aktívami na českom a nemeckom trhu. Teoretická časť je rozdelená do 2 kapitol. Prvá z nich definuje tržný sentiment a popisuje jeho prepojenie s finančnými trhmi a individuálnymi investormi. Prvá kapitola ďalej uvádza vybrané behaviorálne biasy súvisiace so sentimentom a popisuje jeho spôsoby merania. Druhá kapitola je venovaná tržnej neistote. Najprv sa zaoberá jej definíciou a vzťahom so sentimentom. Ďalej uvádza jej možné prepojenie s behaviorálnymi financiami a dôkazy jej prítomnosti na finančných trhoch. V poslednej časti druhej kapitoly sú uvedené spôsoby merania tržnej neistoty. Praktická časť analyzuje vzťah medzi vybranými ukazovateľmi sentimentu a neistoty, a hodnotou vybraných akcií, pomocou vektorovej autoregresie (VAR). Najprv sú zvolené Európsky indikátor sentimentu (ESI) a index ZEW ako premenné reprezentujúce sentiment. Paralelne je zvolený rozptyl v predikciách analytikov ako premenná reprezentujúca neistotu. Následne je vytvorených šesť VAR modelov, súvisiacich s cieľom bakalárskej práce, vrátane popisu a vzájomného porovnania ich výsledkov. Nakoniec sú výsledky sumarizované a diskutované v rámci existujúcej literatúry a sú odvodené návrhy pre budúci výskum.
