Discussion forum as the virtual public sphere? Moderation effect on the internet news discussion for its form and content

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzovala důsledky zavedení moderace online diskuze zpravodajského serveru Aktuálně.cz. Cílem práce bylo objasnit, jak moderace proměnila formu a obsah online diskuze. Případová studie dále hledala souvislosti mezi aspekty online diskuze, jakými jsou anonymita, závadnost, tematičnost či struktura diskuze. Práce se opírá o dosavadní poznatky z oblasti výzkumu online komunikace, masových a nových médií, ale také o koncept veřejné sféry a virtuální veřejné sféry. Jako výzkumná metoda posloužila kvantitativní obsahová analýza Studie ukázala, že moderace sice počet závadných příspěvků nesnížila, ale po jejím zavedení vzrostl počet tematických příspěvků a ubylo urážlivých příspěvků. Po zavedení moderace přibylo anonymních diskutérů. Studie dále potvrdila souvislost mezi anonymitou a deviantním chováním a potvrdila velmi silnou roli, kterou má jedinec v rámci diskuze. Studie dále ukázala, že není možno vzhledem k občasné cenzuře příspěvků považovat online diskuzi Aktuálně.cz za součást virtuální veřejné sféry.

Abstract:

This diploma Thesis analyzed moderation effect on the online news Aktualně.cz discussion for its form and content. The aim of this Thesis was also to found out relations amongst key attributes of online discussion as the proportion of topical and deviant messages, or anonymity of participants. This Thesis is based on previous research about online communication, online news, as well as the concept of the public sphere and the concept of the virtual public sphere. Method, that should disclose effect of moderation, is quantitative content analysis. This diploma results suggest that moderation did not reduce number of deviant messages in the internet news discussion, but it increased quantity of topical messages and increased number of anonymous participants. Relation between participant anonymity and the rate of deviant messages was confirmed. The online news Aktualně.cz discussion couldn’t be considered as the part of the virtual public sphere because of occasional censorship.
