T: Images of mental illness in contemporary photography

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce je věnována způsobům, jakými jsou prostřednictvím fotografie vyobrazeny osoby s psychickým onemocněním, od počátku a rozvoje klinické fotografie, přes reportážní, dokumentární, uměleckou až po autoportrétní zpracování. V navazujících kapitolách budou popsány způsoby vnímání psychických chorob ve společnosti, mechanismy stigmatizace, metody prezentace nemocných v médiích a nakonec se soustředíme na analýzu způsobů vyobrazení psychických chorob v současné fotografii. Přiblížíme si v současné analýze používaný model kategorizace způsobů vyobrazení, který je založen na šesti gramatických osobách (já, ty, on/ona, my, vy, oni) odrážejících v daném vyobrazení odstup fotografující od fotografované osoby. Pojem osobního odstupu je v této práci obzvláště důležitý, protože determinuje vzdálenost autora od psychicky nemocného člověka, přítomnost dialogu mezi ním a hrdinou a ve výsledku i obraz choroby vycházející z dané fotografické narace. Předkládaná práce má za cíl popsat sociální kontextualizaci psychických nemocí, přiblížení současných teoretických směrů týkajících se prezentace nemoci a popis jejich fotografických ztvárnění.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the ways people experiencing mental illness are depicted through photography, starting from its beginnings and the development of clinical photography, through journalistic, documentary, artistic and self-representational practices. In the following chapters, I will discuss how mental illness is perceived in society, the mechanisms of stigma, the methods of representing mental illness in the media, to finally analyze the ways in which mental illness is depicted in contemporary photography. I will discuss the categorization model used for imaging methods analysis developed based on six grammatical persons (I, you, he/she, we, you, they), where the six categories reflect the personal distance of the photographer from the photographed in a given representation. The concept of personal distance is particularly important in this work as it determines the author’s distance to the mental illness depicted, the presence of a dialogue between the author and the protagonist, and the depiction of the illness a photographic narrative results in. This paper aims to contextualize the social experience of mental illness, present contemporary theoretical trends regarding the depiction of illness, and finally discuss its photographic representation.
