Gender reproduction in the everyday life of a classroom: ethnographic research

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá re/produkcí genderu ve školní třídě. Teoreticky se opírá o etnometodologické přístupy k genderu (West a Zimmerman 1987, česky 2008, Fenstermaker a West 2002) a inspiruje se současnými výzkumy dětství a genderu ovlivněnými poststrukturalismem (Davies 2003). Výzkum byl realizován v šesté třídě základní školy ve školním roce 2005/2006 jako etnografické pozorování v hodinách rodinné, výtvarné a hudební výchovy. Studie reprezentuje komplexní pohled na genderovou reprodukci uvnitř školní třídy na různých úrovních, a to 1) na úrovni každodenních interakcí (doing gender), 2) v rovině diskursu a umísťování jedinců v rámci diskursu a 3) v rovině individuálních identit a významů, které genderu připisují samy děti. Gender představuje jako kontinuum a rozebírá ho v souvislosti s dalšími kategoriemi, konkrétně věkem a etnicitou/národností. Tyto kategorie bývají často vnímány jako přirozený základ sociálních rozdílů a slouží jako legitimizace nerovností. Analýza přibližuje způsoby, jakými jsou tyto kategorie re/konstruovány a rozehrávány v sociálním poli, jak se protínají a jak se jejich souhra projevuje v chování a strategiích různých sociálních aktérů a aktérek, žáků a žákyň ve třídě. Další část analýzy je zaměřena na reprodukci genderu v diskursu, a to prostřednictvím analýzy výuky sexuální výchovy. Analýza vychází z prvotního překvapivého zjištění, že se v hodinách sexuální výchovy dívky stávají výrazně méně aktivními a méně se zapojují do diskuse než v hodinách věnovaných jiným tématům. V této části dokumentuji, jak se oblast symbolicky považovaná za ženskou (tj. oblast biologické reprodukce) stává v důsledku určitých diskursivních praktik prostorem, v němž jsou dívky zneviditelňovány. Poslední část práce je inspirována tvrzením Valerie Walkerdine, která říká, že femininita a maskulinita jsou mocné fikce naplněné ve fantazii, ale žité jako fakta (Walkerdine 1990). Pomocí technik, k nimž patří kreslení či krátké slohové útvary, jsem zjišťovala, jakou roli hraje gender v představách dívek a chlapců o jejich vlastních životech i o světě obecně.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses (re)production of gender in the classroom. The theoretical framework of the analysis is ethnomethodological in approach (West and Zimmerman 1987, Fenstermaker and West 2002) and is also inspired by poststructuralist research on children and gender (Davies 2003). The research was conducted in the 6th grade of a grammar school (children aged 11 – 13) in the school year 2005/2006 as an ethnographic study in the music, art and family education classes. The analysis strives to apply a complex perspective on gender reproduction within the classroom and focuses on gender at different levels: 1) the level of everyday interaction (doing gender), 2) the level of discourse and positioning of individuals within the discourse and 3) the level of individual identities and significance of gender for girls and boys in the observed classroom. Gender is analysed as continuum and the analysis focuses also at the interplay of gender and other categories: age and ethnicity/nationality. These categories are common-sensually understood as natural and the thesis shows the parallels between how they were (re)constructed and lived in the classroom. The next part of the thesis is dedicated to gender reproduction within the discourse of sex education. The paper reveals that beliefs about sex education as a “girls' thing” is a myth and shows how the discursive practices leave the girls out of the discussion about sexuality and make them more silent and less involved in the classroom interaction than they are in other subjects in school. The last part of the thesis is inspired by Valerie Walkerdine’s statement that gender is theorised as a fiction, shot through with fantasy, yet lived as a fact, produced and struggled over within the regulatory daily practices of schooling (Walkerdine 1990). Using such techniques as drawing, short stories and fairytale interpretation the role of gender in children’s fantasies was researched.
