Comparison of the portrayal of a woman in the works of Paulina Chiziane and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the portrayal of a woman in contemporary African literature. The aim of this work is to compare female issues in the novel Niketche: Uma história de poligamia by Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane and the short-stories collection The Thing Around Your Neck by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The theoretical part focuses on the historical development of women’s writing, the difference between lusophone and anglophone literary tendencies concentrating on literary works of Nigeria and Mozambique. The practical part analyzes the chosen works.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vyobrazením ženy v současné africké literatuře. Cílem práce je porovnat ženskou problematiku v románu Niketche: Uma história de poligamia mozambické autorky Pauliny Chiziane a souboru povídek The Thing Around Your Neck nigerijské spisovatelky Chimamandy Ngozi Adichie. Teoretická část práce se věnuje historickému vývoji ženské literatury, rozlišení lusofonních a anglofonních literárních tendencí se zaměřením na nigerijskou a mozambickou literární tvorbu. Praktická část se zabývá analýzou vybraných děl.
