Impacts of the covida pandemic on international freight transport

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je zjistit dopad pandemie Covid-19 na mezinárodní přepravu zboží realizovanou prostřednictvím silniční nákladní dopravy. V práci je sledován vývoj intenzity dopravy na mýtných úsecích nacházejících se v blízkosti státních hranic ČR v době covidové krize. Tento vývoj je srovnáván se stavem silniční nákladní dopravy v roce 2019, kdy doprava nebyla zatížena šířícím se onemocněním a vládními zásahy v boji s onemocněním Covid-19. Součástí práce je literární rešerše, která shrnuje dosavadní poznatky dopravních studií se zaměřením na pandemii. V hlavní části práce je podrobně rozebrán stav silniční nákladní dopravy v období jara roku 2020, kdy došlo k nejzásadnějšímu zlomu intenzity dopravy za celé sledované období. Hlavním zjištěním je, že covidová krize měla na silniční nákladní dopravu negativní dopad pouze na jaře roku 2020, tedy v období první vlny pandemie Covid-19, kdy došlo k uzavření podstatné části průmyslové výroby a zejména k odstávkám v automobilovém průmyslu. V další mnohem intenzivnější vlně onemocnění, na podzim roku 2020, se krize u nákladních dopravců neprojevila a intenzita dopravy dosahovala jak v závěru roku 2020, tak i po drtivou část roku 2021 rekordních hodnot. Hlavním důvodem pozitivního vývoje je dohánění ztrát výrobní sféry z jara roku 2020 a následně zvýšený počet zakázek nákladních dopravců.

Abstract:

The aim of this Bachelor Thesis is to investigate the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the international trade, specifically on the international road transport of goods. The thesis studies the changes to the intensity of traffic in the Czech Republic during the Covid-19 Pandemic across selected high-way toll collection points adjacent to the borders of the Czech Republic. This data is then compared to the situation at the same collection points in 2019, before the pandemic started and before government-issued restrictions were put in place. The study follows the following structure, a literature review presents existing research on the impact of pandemic on transport. The core part of the text provides detailed analysis of the state of road transport in Spring 2020. Main findings of the text are listed in conclusions, which shows that the Covid-19 crisis only significantly impacted road transport during the first wave of the disease, in Spring 2020 when a major part of industries had been closed. While the second wave of pandemic was more intensive from the medical perspective, the crisis has not influenced international road transport the same way as the first wave. Additionally, both the second half of 2020 and the monitored period of 2021 show that the value of internationally transported goods reaching record numbers. This positive trend was caused by the production indsutry‘s efforts to make up for the losses caused by the first wave in Spring 2020 which in turn translated into higher demand for international road freight.
