Characteristics of current business correspondence and translation of selected examples into Czech

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je seznámit čtenáře se současnou anglickou obchodní korespondencí a překladem administrativního stylu. Tyto teoretické znalosti jsou propojeny s praktickými ukázkami obchodní korespondence a jejich překladem z anglického do českého jazyka. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. V teoretické části se tato práce zabývá dvěma nejpoužívanějšími typy obchodní korespondence, konkrétně tedy korespondencí dopisovou a e-mailovou. Práce se zaměřuje na historii této korespondence, výhody a nevýhody jejího použití a pozornost je věnována také předepsané struktuře. Následně se práce zabývá jazykem, jenž je pro účely obchodní korespondence vhodný a zmíněny jsou tak například rozdíly mezi formální a neformální angličtinou, či stylistické rozdíly mezi anglickou a českou obchodní korespondencí. V závěru se teoretická část věnuje konkrétním typům obchodních zpráv a charakteristice překladu administrativního stylu. V praktické části této práce se nachází překlad dvanácti anglických e-mailů, pocházejících od anonymních společností, společně s překladatelským komentářem a glosářem, který obsahuje obchodní terminologii. Překladatelský komentář se skládá z makroanalýzy a mikroanalýzy, ve které jsou přeložené e-maily analyzovány a to jak z hlediska překladatelského, tak z hlediska použitého jazyka. Důraz je kladen také na to, zda jsou dodržena předepsaná pravidla pro psaní obchodní korespondence, která jsou zmíněna v teoretické části této práce.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to acquaint readers with current English business correspondence and translation of administrative style. This theoretical knowledge is interconnected with practical examples of business correspondence and their translation from English into Czech. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part deals with the two most used types of business correspondence, namely letter and e-mail correspondence. The thesis focuses on the history of these correspondences, advantages and disadvantages of their use and attention is also paid to the prescribed structure. Subsequently, the thesis deals with a language that is suitable for the purposes of business correspondence so the differences between formal and informal English, or stylistic differences between English and Czech business correspondence are mentioned. Finally, the theoretical part mentions specific types of business reports and the characteristics of the translation of the administrative style. The practical part of this thesis includes a translation of twelve English e-mails from anonymous companies, together with a translation commentary and a glossary that contains business terminology. The translation commentary consists of a macroanalysis and a microanalysis, in which the translated e-mails are analyzed, both in terms of translation and in terms of the language used. Emphasis is also put on whether the prescribed rules for writing business correspondence, which are mentioned in the theoretical part of this work, are observed.
