Satire and grotesque in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “Heart of a Dog”

Abstract:

Diplomová práce “Satira a groteska v novele Psí srdce Michaila Bulgakova” se zabývá teoretickým výkladem pojmů satira a groteska a analýzou jejich estetické funkce v novele Psí srdce Michaila Afanasjeviče Bulgakova. První kapitola práce pojednává o problematice satiry a komiky. Jsou představeny vybrané definice pojmu satira. Významný prostor této části práce je vyhrazen komice, důležité složce satiry, a jejímu členění. Druhá kapitola práce se zabývá groteskou. Jsou představeny vybrané definice tohoto pojmu. Dále je zmíněna teorie grotesky Michaila Bachtina. V další části této kapitoly je pojednána estetická kategorie fantastična, která je kategorii groteskna příbuzná. Zmíněn je pojem ozvláštnění a jeho možná relevance k tématu práce. Třetí kapitola práce se zabývá interpretací novely Psí srdce. Důraz je kladen na hledání prvků komiky, satiry a grotesky s využitím poznatků z teoretické části práce. Interpretace je zaměřena především na hledání a popis způsobů vzájemného propojení estetických kategorií satiry a grotesky.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis “Satire and grotesque in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “Heart of a Dog” endeavours to explain theoretically two terms, satire and grotesque, and to analyze their aesthetic function in the novel Heart of a Dog, written by Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov. The first chapter deals with the issues of satire and comicality. Particular definitions of the term satire are introduced. Significant part of this section focuses on comicality, which is a complicated component of satire, and its structure. The second chapter is on grotesque. Certain definitions of this term are presented. Furthermore, the theory of grotesque by Mikhail Bakhtin is discussed. The chapter also includes aesthetic category of the fantastic, which is closely related to the category of grotesque. The term estrangement (or defamiliarization) and its possible relevance for the topic is mentioned as well. In the third chapter, we try to interpret the novel Heart of a Dog. We search mainly for the elements of comicality, satire and grotesque, applying the findings and knowledge we gained in the theoretical part of the thesis. The interpretation is focused primarily on locating and describing the ways in which aesthetical categories of satire and grotesque are intertwined.
