The Bible Translation in the Mirror of the Skopos Theory

Abstract:

This diploma thesis further develops my bachelor's thesis titled Die Bibel und die Übersetzung am Beispiel des Hohenliedes. The current work aims to expand the previous one and present novel findings. In addition, the diploma thesis deals with the contemporary translation of the Bible, Volxbibel, and utilizes one of its books found in the Old Testament - the Book of Ruth. The work is divided into seven chapters including the practical part and the conclusion.The first chapter introduces the definition of translation itself we well as the definition of the role and the mission of a translator. It is particularly the matter of translating the Bible that is approached in this chapter. The second chapter is dedicated to several areas: the Bible as such, the individual books of the Old Testament and the history of Biblical translation. The chapter also explores the Book of Ruth and its interpretations. Moreover, the fundamental facts regarding the Luther Bible as well as Volxbibel, which are later compared in the practical part, are summarized. Finally, the Hebrew Bible, which is also subject to analysis, is enclosed in the appendix. It is the particularities of the Biblical translation supplemented with the theory of Eugene Albert Nida that are in the spotlight of the third chapter. The forth chapter explores the Skopos theory which served as the basis for the translation of the Song of Solomon. In turn, the practical part investigates whether the same procedures were followed when translating the Book of Ruth. Furthermore, the fourth chapter features the translation theory of Jiří Levý, which was also applied in the practical part of the diploma thesis. The fifth chapter revolves around the language of the youth, its development and, most importantly, its distinctive features with regard to morphology and syntax. The sixth chapter represents the analytical part of the thesis. As anticipated, the introductory section of the sixth chapter describes the method of analysis. The analytical part then goes on to compare individual verses of the third chapter of the Book of Ruth as found in the contemporary Biblical translation, the Volxbibel, to the original German translation of Bible as well as Hebrew Bible. The Czech contemporary translation of the Bible is also utilized for the sake of comparison. The results of the examination are presented in the seventh chapter of the thesis, which also serves as the conclusion.

Tato diplomová práce navazuje na moji bakalářskou práci s názvem Die Bibel und die Übersetzung am Beispiel des Hohenliedes. Má být jejím rozšířením a přinést nové poznatky. Tato práce se nadále zabývá novodobým překladem Bible s názvem Volxbibel, tentokráte na příkladu knihy Rút ze Starého zákona. Práce se skládá ze sedmi kapitol, včetně praktické části a závěru práce. V první kapitole jsou zmíněny definice překladu, role a úkol překladatele. Dále se zabývá problematikou překladu a to konkrétně při překladu Bible. Druhá kapitola je věnována Bibli, historii biblického překladu a jejím jednotlivým knihám Starého zákona. Věnuje se také knize Rút a jejím interpretacím. Přináší také základní poznatky o Luterově Bibli a zkoumané Volxbibel, které jsou pak v praktické části srovnávány. Hebrejský originál Bible, který také slouží k analýze, je k nahlédnutí v příloze. Třetí kapitola je zaměřena na zvláštnosti biblického překladu a je obohacena o teorii biblického překladu teoretika Eugena Nidy. Ve čtvrté kapitole je rozebírána teorie Skoposu, jejíž principy překladatel využil při překladu Písně písní. V praktické části je pak zkoumáno, zda se stejných principů držel i při překladu knihy Rút. Ve čtvrté kapitole se také nachází teorie literárního překladu Jiřího Levého, která byla také využita v praktické části. Pátá kapitola se věnuje jazyku mládeže, jeho vývoji a především morfologickým, syntaktickým a lexikálním zvláštnostem. Šestou kapitolu tvoří analytická část, kde je na úvod popsána metoda analýzy. V analytické části jsou srovnávány jednotlivé verše 3. kapitoly knihy Rút novodobého překladu Volxbibel s její předlohou a originálem. Ke srovnání slouží také Český ekumenický překlad. Výsledky zkoumání jsou uvedeny v závěru práce.
