How were Jean-Jacques Rousseau's writings influential to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of Citizen?

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and its influence on the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. The main objective of this thesis is to answer the question to what extent the key concepts of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's political theory were reflected in the debates of the French National Constituent Assembly and subsequently in the codification of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. In the first part of the thesis, the author examines the socio-historical context of pre-revolutionary France in order to illuminate the facts that lay behind the life and work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as behind the creation of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The second part focuses on the comparative analysis of Rousseau's works and the debates of the National Constituent Assembly along with the final text of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The author concludes that key concepts of Rousseau's political theory were present in the debates of the National Constituent Assembly, however, they were not completely codified in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in their complexity and interconnectedness.

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je dílo Jeana‑Jacquesa Rousseaua a jeho vliv na Deklaraci práv člověka a občana. Hlavním cílem práce je zodpovědět na otázku, do jaké míry se jednotlivé koncepty politické teorie Jeana‑Jacquesa Rousseaua promítly do debat francouzského Ústavodárného národního shromáždění a posléze do samotné kodifikace Deklarace práv člověka a občana. V první části se autor zabývá socio-historickým kontextem předrevoluční Francie za účelem osvětlení skutečností, které stály na pozadí života a tvorby Jeana‑Jacquesa Rousseaua, ale i při vzniku Deklarace práv člověka a občana. Druhá část práce se posléze zaměřuje na komparativní analýzu srovnávající Rousseauova díla s diskuzí Ústavodárného národního shromáždění stejně jako s finálním textem Deklarace práv člověka a občana. Autor dochází k závěru, že klíčové pojmy Rousseauovy politické teorie byly přítomny v debatách Ústavodárného národního shromáždění, avšak nebyly zcela kodifikovány do Deklarace práv člověka a občana v jejich komplexnosti a vzájemné propojenosti.
