Practial implementation of an IoT solution based on open source technologies

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je Internet věcí. Cílem práce bylo položit teoretický základ nezbytný k pochopení problematiky IoT, analyzovat výhody a nevýhody open source řešení, porovnat populární IoT platformy a také navrhnout IoT řešení konkrétního problému, spolu s jeho praktickou aplikací. Teoretický základ byl shromážděn na základě rešerše a analýzy dostupných zdrojů. První část práce se věnuje teoretickému základu, tedy pojmu Internet věcí, součástem tvořícím IoT zařízení, různým způsobům připojení, bezpečnosti ve vztahu k IoT a také pojmu Open source. Druhá část práce demonstruje proces zavedení nového IoT řešení do domácnosti. Řešenými problémy jsou zaprvé neefektivní proces krmení domácích zvířat a zadruhé nadužívání chytrých telefonů kvůli špatné dostupnosti některých informač- ních zdrojů. Praktická část práce dokumentuje celý proces nasazení, od analýzy problémů, přes návrh řešení (včetně návrhu bezpečnostních opatření), následnou implementaci dvou prototypů - chytrého zrcadla a automatického krmidla domácích zvířat (feederu), až po otes- tování celého řešení. Výsledkem práce je přehledný teoretický základ a funkční IoT řešení, sestávající ze dvou plně funkčních IoT prototypů, které tvoří základ domácího IoT ekosys- tému. Z práce také vyplývá, že open source řešení může znamenat značnou úsporu zejména pořizovacích nákladů a stejnou nebo vyšší úroveň bezpečnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the Internet of Things. The goal of this thesis was to lay down the theoretical basis necessary for understanding IoT, analyse the pros and cons of open source solutions, compare popular IoT platforms, and design an IoT solution for a specific problem, including its practical implementation. The theoretical basis was gathered based on research and analysis of available sources. The first part of the thesis focuses on this theoretical basis, specifically on the term Internet of Things, individual components that make up IoT devices, various connectivity solutions, security in relation to IoT and also the term open-source. The second part of the thesis demonstrates the process of implementation of a new IoT solution for a household. Addressed problems are an inefficient process of pet feeding and a smartphone overuse stemming from insufficient availability of certain information sources. The practical part of this thesis documents the implementation process, from the initial analysis of said problems, through the design of a solution - a smart mirror and an automatic pet feeder, to a testing phase of the whole solution. The results of this thesis are a clear theoretical basis and working IoT solutions, consisting of two fully operational IoT prototypes, which make up the foundations of a future private IoT ecosystem. The thesis also shows that open source solutions can mean a significant reduction in acquisition costs and an equal or even higher level of security.
