Nitra-Horné Krškany: Anthropological study of the first farmers

Abstract:

Neolitický lid kultury s lineární keramikou pohřbíval své mrtvé na pohřebišti na území dnešního města Nitry v závěru 6. tisíciletí BC. Cílem této práce je přinést popis jednotlivých skeletů spolu se základní antropologickou analýzou a zasadit výsledky do širšího kontextu v rámci výzkumu způsobu života prvních zemědělců. K dispozici byly kosterní pozůstatky 77 jedinců, z toho 28 nedospělých jedinců, 19 mužů, 27 žen a 3 neurčitelných dospělých jedinců. Ženy umíraly častěji ve věku do 35 let, muži v pozdějším věku. Převaha žen na pohřebišti mohla být způsobena migračními vlivy v rámci šíření zemědělského způsobu života. Průměrná výška u mužů byla v průměru 165.0 cm, u žen 155.2 cm. Populace z Nitry byla dolichokranní, středně robustní s platymerními femury. Projevy fyzické zátěže na kostech jsou důkazem dlouhodobé fyzické aktivity. Cribra orbitalia, porotická hyperostóza a Harrisovy linie jsou dokladem stresových období v životě některých jedinců z Nitry. Zdravotní stav populace byl poznamenán negativními vlivy způsobenými přechodem na zemědělský způsob života, byly zaznamenány četné zubní kazy, produktivně-degenerativní změny, vyskytovaly se záněty včetně jednoho případu možné tuberkulózy. Dokladem násilí u prvních zemědělců jsou traumata na lebkách pěti jedinců. Populace z Nitry se příliš nelišila od obdobně datovaného souboru z moravských Vedrovic.

Abstract:

Neolithic people of the Linear Pottery or Linearbandkeramik (LBK) culture buried their dead in the cemetery on the area of today's city of Nitra (Slovakia) at the end of the 6th millennium BC. This thesis aims to present a detailed description of skeletons along with a basic anthropological analysis and to bring the results into a wider context of research of the way of life of the first farmers. The material comprised of 77 individuals, including 28 juveniles, 19 men, 27 women and 3 indeterminable adults. The predominance of females at the burial ground could be due to migration during the spread of agricultural life. Females were dying more often at the age under 35 years, males in the older age. The average stature in males reached 165.0 cm, in females 155.2 cm. Population from Nitra was dolichocranic, moderately robust with platymeric femurs. Distinct muscle topography, enthesopathies and other alterations on bones associated with long-term workload were noted in skeletal material. The health status of the population was affected by negative effects caused by the transition to agriculture. Numerous dental caries, degenerative changes and inflammations occurred, including one case of tuberculosis. Cribra orbitalia, porotic hyperostosis and Harris lines demonstrate stressful periods during the life of some individuals from Nitra. Violence among the first farmers is illustrated by cranial trauma in five individuals. The population of Nitra did not differ much from the similarly dated population of Moravian Vedrovice.
