Voyeurism in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis defines the purpose of voyeurism in Alfred Hitchcock's film Rear Window (1954). The thesis focuses primarily on the morality of this phenomenon, more precisely on how the protagonists and audience perceive it through Hitchcock's lens. Furthermore, the film is contextualized and reflected through a description of the 1950s in America, its traditional gender roles, and the anxieties that prevailed in the era of McCarthyism. This thesis also argues that voyeurism is the cinematic technique that engages Hitchcock's audience in the film's narrative, generating suspense. In essence, then, this thesis argues that Rear Window is as much a thriller as it is social commentary.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce definuje, jaký má voyeurismus ve filmu Okno do dvora (1954) od Alfreda Hitchcocka význam. Práce se zaměřuje především na morální stránku tohoto fenoménu, respektive jak ji vnímají protagonisté a divák samotný prostřednictvím Hitchcockova objektivu. Daný film je zkoumán v kontextu 50. let 20. století v USA, včetně tehdejších mužských a ženských společenských rolí a pocitů úzkosti spojených s érou Mccarthismu. Dále tato práce představuje voyeurismus jako filmovou techniku, která vtahuje diváka hlouběji do děje a udržuje jej v napětí. Podstatou této práce je tedy prokázat, že je Okno do dvora nejen napínavý thriller, ale také významný komentář tehdejší společnosti.
