The most common diseases in bully breed dogs and their breeding standards

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o bull plemenech psů, podmínkách jejich uchovnění a nečastějších nemocech, které je postihují. Na začátku práce jsou jednotlivá plemena popsána, s důrazem na jejich historii, povahové charakteristiky, možnosti využití a podmínky uchovnění. Tito psi se stávají velmi populární a i přes to, že byli šlechtěni k zápasům s dobytkem či jinými zvířaty, mají vstřícnou povahu k lidem a jsou dobrými společníky i dětem. Druhá část je zaměřená na nejčastější nemoci, které se u těchto psů vyskytují a jsou sledovány, příp. geneticky testovány v rámci uchovňování plemenných jedinců.Zaměření směřovalo k pohybovému aparátu, kde se v nejvyšší frekvenci u těchto plemen vyskytují obtíže s dysplazií kyčelního a loketního kloubu, příp. ruptura kraniálního zkříženého vazu a panostitida jako růstové onemocnění.Další kapitola byla věnována onemocněním očí - kataraktě, entropiu a primární luxaci čočky, které jsou u bull plemen dědičné.Častou obtíží pro psy i majitele jsou kožní problémy, zejm. demodikóza a atopická dermatitida.Americký stafordšírský teriér a americký pitbulteriér jsou plemena, která trpí nejčastěji cerebelární ataxií (NCL-A), která patří do kapitoly neurologických onemocnění spolu s epilepsií a vrozenou hluchotou. NCL-A postihuje mozeček a způsobuje poruchu koordinace pohybu. Projevuje se mezi třetím až pátým rokem věku. Jelikož se tato nemoc dědí, je jednou z podmínek uchovnění u amerických stafordšírských teriérů negativní výsledek genetického testu, který se provádí v akreditovaných laboratořích.U stafordšírských bulteriérérů se vyskytuje L-2-hydroxyglutarová acidurie, která postihuje centrální nervovou soustavu a patří mezi neurometabolická onemocnění. Stejně jako NCL-A se také geneticky testuje. Je tedy velmi důležité, aby chovatelé nejen prováděli selekci nemocných zvířat, ale evidovali i přenašeče.Posledním a neméně vážným popsaným onemocněním je polycystická choroba ledvin, která u bulteriéra patří mezi onemocnění dědičná a zároveň neléčitelná. Je tedy opět na snadě přísná selekce za pomoci genetického testování, které je pro toto plemeno povinné.

Abstract:

This Project Work explicates the nature of bully dogs breed, explains the conditions of their breeding and the most common diseases they used to suffer. At the beginning of the work individual breeds have been described with an emphasis on their history, including their evaluation, characters, interaction with human and usefulness in our society and conditions of their breeding. Despite they are reared to fight with cattle and other animals, they are friendlier to people and accompanies children too. This makes the breed become very popular.The second part of the thesis focuses on the most common diseases of these dogs and these diseases are monitored, respectively genetic testing within conditions of their breeding.The focus was directed on the movement system where difficulties with hip dysplasia and elbow, possibly rupture of the cranial juncture and panostitis as a growth disorder.The next chapter was devoted to eye disease - cataract, entropy and primary lenticular luxation, which are hereditary in bully dogs breed.A common difficulty for dogs and their owners are skin problems, esp. demodicosis and atopic dermatitis.Breeds like, American Staffordshire terrier and American pit bull terrier most commonly suffers with cerebellar ataxia (NCL-A), which belongs to the chapter of neurological disorders along with epilepsy and congenital deafness. NCL-A affects the cerebellum and causes a motion co-ordination disorder. The syndrome occurs between the third and fifth years of age. To avoid this inherited disease, normally breeding of American Staffordshire terrier is allowed after having a negative result of genetic test performed in accredited laboratories. Genetic disease L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria occurs in staffordshire bull terrier and affects the central nervous system and belongs to neurometabolic diseases. NCL-A is genetic testing too. Thus it is utmost important for the firm engaged in breeding process to not only segregate the affected dogs but keeping a proper record of genetic carriers to avoid the disease.The last and no less serious disease is polycystic kidney disease which belongs to hereditary disease and incurable for bull terrier. Therefore is needed strict selection by genetic testing which is mandatory for this breed.
