The influence of suprermarkets on the local food web in Boskovice (Czech Republic)

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vlivem provozu supermarketů na lokální potravinovou síť v malém městě. Malá města se totiž stala, po nasycení měst velkých, cílem expanze nadnárodních obchodních řetězců. V kontextu ekonomické lokalizace se pokouší popsat, jaké socioekonomické dopady měla výstavba supermarketů na drobné prodejce potravin a producenty v Boskovicích a jejich okolí. Zejména pak, jaké dopady na ně mají některé principy fungování supermarketů, konkrétně jejich cenová politika a podmínky pro dodavatele. Pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s místními prodejci a producenty potravin práce zjišťovala, zda supermarkety ovlivnily jejich počet, ekonomickou situaci a počet jejich zaměstnanců. Výzkum neidentifikoval takový úbytek obchodů, jaký popisují výzkumy v některých rozvinutých zemích jako je například Velká Británie, ale poukázal na obdobný vývoj – odliv zákazníků, pokles tržeb či snižování počtu zaměstnanců.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to examine the influence of supermarkets and their operation on local food network in a small town which became, after large cities had been satisfied , the main target in the expansion of multinational retail chain stores. In the context of economic localization, the thesis attempts to describe the socio-economic impacts which small retailers and food producers in Boskovice and their surroundings face after a supermarket is built in their area; particularly, what impacts some principles of supermarkets might bear for suppliers, especially their prices and overall conditions. Using semi-structured interviews with local retailers and food producers, this paper tried to investigate whether supermarkets affected their amount, their economic status, and the number of their employees. The research did not identify the decrease of shops, which can be found and described in some researches in several highly developed countries such as the United Kingdom, but drew a parallel development - the outflow of customers, declining sales or reduction of number of employees.
