Coping with craving in abstaining addicts

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na téma zvládání cravingu u závislých, kteří se pokoušejí žít bez drog. Klade si za cíl vytvořit teorii objasňující zacházení abstinujících závislých s „chutěmi“, které lze označit za významnou příčinu porušení abstinence. Zvládání cravingu je proto důležitým tématem v oblasti udržování pozitivní změny. Součástí práce je kvalitativní výzkum, v jehož rámci je použita metoda zakotvené teorie. Ke sběru dat byla zvolena kombinace metody ohniskových skupin a individuálních rozhovorů. Na základě analýzy dat byl vytvořen model získávání vědomé kontroly nad chutí, který zahrnuje faktory ovlivňující daný jev a ilustruje zvládání cravingu u abstinujících závislých. Jedná se o třífázový model, který popisuje získávání kontroly nad chutí v následujících třech etapách: uvědomění bažení, rozhodnutí, zda se závislý craving pokusí zvládnout nebo mu podlehne a použití strategie zvládání. Model byl diskutován přímo se závislými, kteří ho potvrdili. V diskuzi jsou zjištěné závěry srovnávány s předchozími studiemi, lze zde nalézt také popis nedostatků práce a doporučení pro další výzkumy, které se budou zabývat stejnou problematikou.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on coping with craving of addicts who are trying to live without drugs. It aims to create a theory explaining how abstaining addicts handle “desires”, which can be termed a major cause of abstinence violation. Coping with craving is therefore an important issue in the area of positive change maintaining. Part of this thesis is a qualitative research, where the grounded theory method was used. The combination of focused groups and individual interviews was chosen for data collection. Based on data analysis a model of acquiring of conscious craving control was created, the model includes factors affecting the phenomenon and illustrates coping with craving of abstaining addicts. The three-phase model describes the craving control acquiring in the following three stages: awareness of craving, decision about coping with craving and use of coping strategy. The model was discussed directly with addicts, who confirmed it. There are conclusions compared with previous studies in the discussion, also shortcomings of the thesis are described there and suggestions made for further researches, which will deal with the same issue.
