Hokey-Pokey, Higgledy-Piggledy vs. techtle mechtle, láry fáry: A Contrastive Linguistic Analysis of Reduplicative Expressions in English and Czech

Anotácia:

Diplomová práce se zabývá studiem reduplikativních výrazů v českém a anglickém jazyce. V teoretické části je vysvětlen fenomén reduplikace v angličtině a práce se poté detailněji zabývá některými jejími specifickými subkategoriemi: kontrastní reduplikací, intenzivní reduplikací a takzvanou “šm-reduplikací”. Následně jsou tyto kategorie srovnávány s významově podobnými gramatickými konstrukcemi z českého jazyka. Dále se práce zabývá místem reduplikace v českých slovotvorných procesech. V praktické části diplomové práce je popsána metodologie výzkumu, jehož výsledky jsou následně objasněny a vyhodnoceny z hlediska četnosti výskytu jednotlivých druhů reduplikativ. Český i anglický korpus je podrobně analyzován a následně kategorizován z hlediska morfologie, etymologie a sémantiky. Na základě analýzy jsou poté srovnávány společné prvky a rozdíly mezi českými a anglickými reduplikacemi.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis is a contrastive study of reduplicative expressions in Czech and English. The theoretical part of the thesis begins with an explanation of the reduplication phenomenon in English and further studies its distinctive subtypes: contrastive reduplication, intensive reduplication, and schm-reduplication, which are subsequently contrasted with comparable linguistic structures in Czech. Additionally, reduplication is studied as a productive word-formation process in Czech language. In the second part of the thesis, the methodology of the analysis is introduced, and the theoretical framework is furthermore applied on the collected items in the corpora of English and Czech reduplicatives, with the aim of classifying and analysing these constructions from the morphological, etymological, and semantic point of view. Based on the analysis of the corpora, conclusions are drawn about the frequency of use of each type of reduplicative, contrasting the similarities and differences in the formation and function of reduplicative constructions in both the aforementioned languages.
