Genetic aspects in modern horse breeding

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce poskytuje komplexní poznatky z oblasti chovu koní. První část literárního přehledu shrnuje současnou problematiku anatomie, fyziologie a způsobů reprodukce koní. Druhá část je založena na genetické determinaci vybraných monogenních znaků ovlivňujících zbarvení, nemoci a alternativní pohyb koní. Hlavním cílem experimentální části bylo zjistit, v jaké míře využívají chovatelé možnost své koně geneticky testovat. K tomuto účelu bylo realizováno dotazníkové šetření, kterého se zúčastnilo 123 respondentů. Výsledky ukázaly, že 60,2 % chovatelů využilo alespoň jednou možnost genetického testování koní. Většina chovatelů (83,7 %) si myslí, že jsou kupující ochotni nabídnout vyšší částku za koně atraktivního zbarvení. Celkem 71,5 % chovatelů uvedlo, že by mělo být v ČR povinné genetické testování plemenných hřebců na WFFS. Pro zjištění vztahu mezi dvěma kategoriemi a testování hypotéz byl realizován Pearsonův χ2 test nezávislosti. Byla zjištěna statistická průkaznost existence vztahu mezi zkušenostmi s chovem koní a dalšími dvěma proměnnými: počtem odchovaných hříbat (p<0,05) a využíváním genetických testů (p<0,05). Naopak zkušenosti s chovem koní nesouvisí s názorem chovatelů na povinné testování plemeníků na WFFS (p>0,05). Tyto výsledky prokázaly zájem začínajících chovatelů o problematiku genetiky v chovu koní, což je důležitý předpoklad pro budoucí zlepšení úrovně chovu koní v České republice.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis provides comprehensive knowledge in the field of horse breeding. The first part of the literature review summarizes the current issues of equine anatomy, physiology and methods of reproduction. The second part focuses on genetic determination of selected monogenic traits influencing equine colors, diseases and alternative movements. The main goal of the experimental part was to find out the number of breeders, who take the opportunity to genetically test their horses. For this purpose, a survey was conducted, which was attended by 123 respondents. The results showed that 60.2 % of breeders used genetic testing of their horses at least once. Most breeders (83.7 %) think that buyers are willing to offer a higher amount for a horse of attractive coloring. A total of 71.5 % breeders stated that genetic testing of breeding stallions for WFFS should be mandatory in the Czech Republic. Pearson's χ2 independence test was performed to determine the relationship between the two categories and to hypotheses testing. The statistical evidence of the relationship between experience in horse breeding and two other variables was detected: the number of bred foals (p<0.05) and the use of genetic tests (p<0.05). On the other hand, the experience in horse breeding is not related to the opinion of breeders on the mandatory testing of stallions for WFFS (p>0.05). These results proved that the beginning breeders are interested in equine genetics, which is an important prerequisite for the future improvement of the breeding level in the Czech Republic.
