Analysis of hydrometeorological extremes in the Czech Republic area based on newspaper articles, 1921–1940

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá studiem hydrometeorologických extrémů (HME) a jejich obětí na území dnešní České republiky v letech 1921–1940. Data byla získána na základě článků z Lidových novin, které pokrývaly celé studované období. Celkový počet samotných událostí HME byl 1 044. Události byly rozděleny do pěti druhů událostí. Jednalo se o: povodně, konvektivní bouře, období sucha, zimní fenomény a mrazy. Z důvodu častého výskytu kombinací více HME dosáhla hodnota druhů událostí HME celkové výše 1 245. Konvektivní bouře byly nejčastějším druhem události HME s počtem 598 (48,0 %). Roky s nejvyšší četností HME ve studovaném období byly roky 1925 a 1935, ve kterých se shodně vyskytlo 92 druhů událostí HME (7,3 %). Nejpostiženější oblastí se stal Jihomoravský kraj s počtem 366 druhů událostí HME (22,8 %). HME měly ve sledovaném období na svědomí 449 obětí, které následně byly rozděleny do dvou skupin na oběti přímo související s událostmi HME (361 obětí) a oběti následkem uklouznutí na náledí, zimních sportů a propadnutí se ledem (88 obětí). Nejvyšší počet obětí byl zaznamenán v roce 1922 se 46 oběťmi (10,2 %). Nejvíce obětí bylo zaznamenáno v Jihomoravském kraji, a to 84 obětí (18,7 %). Nejvyšší počet obětí v první skupině byl evidován následkem úderu blesku s počtem 155 obětí (43,0 %). V druhé skupině bylo zaznamenáno nejvíce obětí u propadnutí se ledem a následného utopení (48 obětí, 54,5 %). Diplomová práce významně doplnila stoletou (1921–2020) databázi hydrometeorologických extrémů a jejich obětí v České republice ve studovaném období 1921–1940 a rozšířila poznatky o časoprostorové variabilitě HME a jejich dopadech na lidskou společnost.

Abstract:

The submitted diploma thesis deals with the study of hydrometeorological extremes (HME) and their victims in the territory of present-day Czech Republic during the years 1921-1940. The data was obtained based on articles from Lidové noviny, which covered the entire studied period. The total number of HME events was 1,044, categorized into five types namely: floods, convective storms, drought periods, winter phenomena, and frosts. Due to frequent combinations of multiple HME events, the total number of HME types reached 1,245. Convective storms were the most common type of HME event with 598 occurrences (48.0 %). The years with the highest frequency of HME events in the studied period were 1925 and 1935, both with 92 types of HME events (7.3 %). The most affected region was the South Moravian Region with 366 types of HME events (22.8 %). HME events were responsible for 449 victims during the studied period, divided into two groups: victims directly related to HME events (361 victims) and victims due to slipping on ice, winter sports, and falling through ice (88 victims). The highest number of victims was recorded in 1922 with 46 victims (10.2 %). The highest number of victims in the first group was due to lightning strikes with 155 victims (43.0 %), while the second group had the highest number of victims due to falling through ice and subsequent drowning (48 victims, 54.5 %). The thesis significantly expanded the century-long (1921-2020) database of hydrometeorological extremes and their victims in the Czech Republic during the studied period of 1921-1940 and extended the knowledge about the spatiotemporal variability of HME events and their impact on human society.
