Lovely Choleric: The Star Image of Jiří Sovák in Film and Television Production of the 60s and 70s

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou hvězdného obrazu českého filmového, televizního a divadelního herce Jiřího Sováka. Práce uplatňuje metodologický rámec výzkumu hvězdných systémů britského filmového historika a teoretika Richarda Dyera, a její časové rozmezí je stanoveno na 60. a 70. léta. Předmětem bádání jsou filmové a televizní projekty, propagační materiály, mediální publicita s dobovým tiskem a periodiky. Výzkum se zaměřuje na představení dvou typických rolí herce – postav choleriků a stoicky klidných mužů, a poukazuje na Sovákovo věrohodné ztvárnění postav, které jsou o mnoho let starší než samotný herec. Herec se dominantně objevoval v komediální tvorbě a byl mu přisuzován status jednoho z nejlepších komediantů své doby. Současně se o něm hovořilo jako o lidovém herci. Tato pověst vycházela z realistického pojetí rolí, při kterém se prolínaly jeho charakterové a povahové rysy s postavami, a byla posilována rovněž hercovým zobrazením a sebeprezentací na veřejnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the star image of the Czech film, television and theatre actor Jiří Sovák. The thesis applies the methodological framework of star systems research by the British film historian and theorist Richard Dyer. I focus on actor´s film and television career and work from 1960s and 1970s in detail. In this period the actor was the most active and his popularity reached its peak. The objects of research are film and television projects, promotional materials, and media publicity. The thesis focuses on the presentation of two typical roles of the actor, those of choleric and stoically calm men, and highlights Sovák's believable portrayal of characters many years older then him throughout his career. The actor was presented predominantly in comedy and was considered as one of the best comedians of his time. At the same time, he was referred to as a folk actor. His reputation as a folk actor was based on a realistic conception of roles in which his character and personality traits were intertwined with the characters, and was also reinforced by the actor's public portrayal and self-presentation.
