The Problem and Ways of Communication of Human Disunity in L. N. Andreyev's Prose

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to determine L. N. Andreyev's strategy and ways of conveying the problem of human disunity in his prose. The dissertation also explores the peculiarities of Andreyev's creative method in the context of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This paper is based on works studying his life and literary work, but it draws mainly on analyses of Andreyev's specific prose. Andreyev wonders how an individual is guided in his behaviour, either by certain social stereotypes or his own intentions and desires, how a person perceives himself and other people and interacts with them. He sees a lack of understanding between people, their spiritual inferiority, and their indifference to the fate of others. In his works often even close people cannot find a way to overcome misunderstandings between each other because the individual is unable to get beyond his ego. We have identified several ways in which Andreyev expresses the problem of human dissociation: the figure of the border, the theme of conflict of social roles, the device of silence, the motif of laughter, and the theme of death. Andreyev's use of such themes, motifs, and images aims to comprehend the meaning of human life and his inner world. The social status and background of the character are not essential to the author. Andreyev focuses on describing the universal that connects all people. The analysis of Andreyev's works shows that the writer also considered the possibility of human unity with others, but only as an unattainable ideal, at least, in his contemporary precarious times. Andreyev understood, first of all, that it is impossible for a person to understand another unless he has known himself, has found the meaning of life, and has reached a certain point of spiritual self-development. This paper expands knowledge of the work of Andreyev and the period of the late 19th – early 20th century.

Abstract:

Výzkumným cílem disertační práce je určit strategii a způsoby uměleckého ztvárnění problému odloučení, ztráty vzájemného kontaktu v próze L. N. Andrejeva. Práce se rovněž pokouší prozkoumat zvláštnosti Andrejevovy tvůrčí metody v kontextu konce 19. a počátku 20. století. Disertace vychází z prací studujících jeho život a tvorbu, snaží se však vycházet zejména z analýz konkrétních Andrejevových děl. Analýzy nás vedou k přesvědčení, že pro Andrejeva je důležité, jestli se jedinec ve svém chování orientuje podle určitých společenských stereotypů, nebo podle svých vlastních záměrů a přání, to, jak vnímá sám sebe a ostatní lidi a jak s nimi komunikuje. Uvědomuje si nedostatek porozumění mezi lidmi, povrchnost každodenní životní reality, nedostatečné ponoření se do duchovních sfér i častou lhostejnost k osudu druhých, což ho vede k tomu, že se těmito tématy neustále zaobírá ve svých prozaických a dramatických dílech, publicistice, dopisech a denících. Pokusili jsme se sledovat několik tematických dominant, kterými Andrejev vyjadřuje tento problém: obraz hranice, téma konfliktu sociálních rolí, téma mlčení, motiv smíchu a téma smrti. Andrejev používá tyto témata, motivy a obrazy v takové míře a takovým způsobem, aby kladl otázky – po smyslu lidského života, po tom, co se skrývá v jeho vnitřním světě, jaká je „duše“ jeho hrdinů a co vše ji tvoří. Nehledá vlastnosti, kterými postava vyniká a které charakterizují pouze ji, ale skrze pronikání do nitra jedince hledá vlastnosti „univerzální“, které spojují všechny lidi a na které se soustředí celá jeho tvorba. Analýza Andrejevových děl ukazuje, že spisovatel také uvažoval o možnosti lidské jednoty s ostatními, ale pouze jako o nedostižném ideálu, alespoň v jemu současné době. Andrejev především pochopil, že není možné, aby člověk porozuměl druhému člověku, pokud nepoznal sám sebe, nenašel smysl života, nedospěl k určitému bodu svého duchovního vývoje. Skutečná práce je pokusem o rozšíření znalostí o Andrejevově tvorbě i období přelomu 19. a 20. století.
