The Image of Festivities and Ceremonies in the Czech Medieval Chivalric Novels

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zabývá obrazem slavností a ceremonií, jak jej konstruují autoři českých středověkých rytířských románů, a to na případu čtyř typů těchto jednání – korunovaci, svatbě a zásnubách, adventu regis a pohřební ceremonii. Slavnosti a ceremonie jsou v této práci definovány jako jednání, která reprezentují a potvrzují společenský řád, a která se mohou a nemusí vázat k rituálům transcendentálního charakteru. Na základě analýzy souvislých i kusých zmínek v jednotlivých pramenech je stanoven ideální obraz těchto čtyř jednání, jak jej vnímali autoři románů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the image of festivities and ceremonies, how it is constructed by authors of Czech medieval chivalric novels. Festivities and ceremonies are defined as actions that represent and confirm the social order. These actions may or may not be connected with transcendental rituals. This thesis focuses on four types of these actions – the coronation, wedding and engagement, Adventus Regis and funeral ceremony. The ideal image of ceremonies and festivities perceived by the authors of the novels is given by the analysis of both continuous and fragmentary references in these novels.
