The future of German theatre system: Can revenue management bridge the gap between fixed costs and income?

Abstract:

Vedení německých divadel financovaných z veřejných prostředků (publicly funded German music theaters, PGMT) musí čelit neustále se zvětšující propasti mezi zvyšováním fixních nákladů a stagnací tržeb. To je třeba přičíst politickým okolnostem a strukturálnímu prostředí, ve kterém se PGMT nacházejí. Zatímco dynamické přizpůsobování kolektivních smluv neustále zvyšuje fixní náklady bez vnitřního vlivu, veřejný mandát přicházející spolu s divadelními smlouvami jako základem vysokých dotací jaksi omezuje možnosti vyšších cen. Jelikož řízení tržeb (revenue management, RM) je úspěšným způsobem kompenzace mezery ve financování mezi fixními náklady a tržbami v jiných podnicích, zkoumá tato disertační práce otázku, zda existuje potenciál k překlenutí mezery ve financování v PGMT pomocí RM. Tato disertační práce přináší ucelený přehled o vnitřních specifikách ekonomiky PGMT, vnějším prostředí a výzkumu v oblasti cenové politiky, RM a dynamických cen (dynamic pricing, DP) a výzkumu mezi nediváky ohledně PGMT. Na základě devíti rozhovorů s experty je prozkoumán a popsán vnitřní pohled na možnosti implementace RM v PGMT, následovaný analýzou dat, která uzavírá jednu důležitou mezeru ve výzkumu spočívající v průměrné cenové hladině PGMT, a indexem popisujícím cenové hladiny každého PGMT ve vztahu k ostatním. Celoněmecký online průzkum mezi diváky i nediváky o preferencích a chování obou skupin, jejich ochotě platit (willingness to pay, WTP) za různé druhy hudebních divadelních představení, přijetí DP a konečně také vlivu veřejného mandátu na jejich WTP doplňuje celkový obraz německého systému hudebního divadla financovaného z veřejných prostředků a popisuje možnosti a limity implementace RM v něm. Na základě výsledků výzkumu lze dojít k závěru, že RM má vysoký potenciál překlenout propast mezi zvyšováním fixních nákladů a tržbami, ale pouze po omezenou dobu, a to implementací DP a obecně vyšší cenovou hladinou. RM nebude dlouhodobě úspěšné, protože fixní náklady se budou neustále zvyšovat. Pro záchranu systému bude zásadní přehodnocení a restrukturalizace PGMT a německého divadelního systému, jakmile RM již nepokryje rostoucí náklady, což bude mít negativní vliv na atraktivitu PGMT.

Abstract:

The management of publicly funded German theaters (PGMTs) has to face a perma-nently increasing gap between rising fixed costs and stagnating revenues. This is to be attributed to the political circumstances and structural environment in which PGMTs are located. While the dynamic adjustment of collective agreements in-creases fixed costs constantly without internal influence, the public mandate coming along with the theater contracts as a basis for the high subsidies somehow limits the possibilities of higher prices. As revenue management (RM) is a successful way to deal with the compensation of the funding gap between fixed costs and revenues in other businesses, this dissertation investigates the question if there is a potential to bridge the funding gap in PGMTs with RM. This dissertation gives a comprehensive overview of the internal specifics of the economy of PGMTs, the external environment and the research field of pricing policy, RM and dynamic pricing (DP) and non-audience research in PGMTs. Based on nine expert interviews, the inside view of the possibilities of implementing RM in PGMTs is investigated and described, followed by a data analysis closing one im-portant research gap calculating the average price level of PGMTs as well as an index describing the price levels of each PGMT in relation to the others. A Germany-wide online survey among the audience and non-audience on preferences and behavior of both groups, their willingness to pay (WTP) for different kinds of musical theater performances, the acceptance of DP and finally the influence of the public mandate on their WTP completes the overall picture of the German publicly funded musical theater system to describe the possibilities and limits of implementing RM within it. Based on the research outcomes, it can be concluded that RM has a high poten-tial to bridge the gap between rising fixed costs and the revenues, but only for a lim-ited period of time, by implementing DP and a higher price level in general. RM will not be successful in the long run as fixed costs will keep increasing constantly. To save the system, a rethinking and restructuring of PGMTs and the German theater system will be essential as soon as RM no longer covers the rising costs, having a negative leverage on the attractiveness of PGMTs.
