Power Lies within Organisation. Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Associations in Czechoslovakia between the World Wars

Abstract:

Stejně jako mnoho jiných profesních, zájmových či uměleckých skupin i majitelé a provozovatelé kinematografů měli v době první republiky poměrně dobře rozvinutou spolkovou základnu. Tato diplomová práce detailně popisuje rozsáhlou činnost těchto sdružení a společně s tím i celkovou problematiku dotýkající se oboru předvádění filmů v těchto letech. Kromě historického úvodu se snaží zařadit kinomajitele do struktury československého kinematografického průmyslu, popsat vztahy nejen s dalšími profesními a zájmovými skupinami, odbory zaměstnanců, ale také s vládními úřady nebo veřejností. Spolky slibovaly svým členům jednotný boj za novou legislativu, snížení výdajů, výhodné kolektivní smlouvy či usnadnění každodenních úředních povinností. K vytvoření detailní představy o fungování těchto spolků, jejich funkce v průmyslu i ve společnosti obecně pomohly především historické sondy do archivních pramenů (vlastní časopisy, zápisy ze schůzí, korespondence s úřady) některých spolků, především pak brněnského Spolku majitelů a provozovatelů kinematografů pro zemi moravsko-slezskou. Částečně tedy tato práce navazuje na výzkumný projekt Lokální filmová historie: Brno a kulturní dějiny filmu do r. 1945, který byl v době psaní práce realizován v rámci Ústavu filmu a audiovizuální kultury na Masarykově univerzitě.

Abstract:

Associations of Czech cinema owners and exhibitors of the First Republic had relatively well developed member base, as well as many other professional associations, interest and artistic groups of that period. Not only is the thesis focused on vast variety of activities of these cinema owners’ associations, it also concentrates on broader questions related to exhibition of movies in that time. This thesis is based on principles of the New Film History, which is typical for its multiplicity of domains, micro-historical approach, examination of primal sources, or continuous impeachment and problematisation. History of cinema owners’ associations reaches up to early twentieth century, which is the time when many Czech exhibitors became members of an Austrian association. The thesis is mainly focused on the period of the First Republic (1918 – 1938), but it also works with the period of the Second Republic and protectorate, when the structure of associations falls apart and disappears completely in the end. Moreover, the thesis is seeking to place cinema owners into the structure of Czechoslovak film industry, describe relations between them and other professional associations, interest groups and labour unions as well as public administrations or general public. The associations promised its members initiation of new legislation, diminution of expenditures, advantageous collective agreements or reduction of everyday administrative burden. Profound study of archives (newspapers, minutes of meetings, correspondence with administrations), especially those of the Association of Cinema Owners and Operators of Moravia and Silesia situated in Brno, facilitated complex understanding of functioning concerning these associations and the role they played in industry and society. As a matter of fact the thesis partially continues the work of “Local History of Cinema: Brno and Cultural History of Cinema to 1945” project, which is realized by the Department of Film Studies and Audiovisual Culture at Masaryk University of Brno.
