Opposition in Azerbaijan

Abstract:

Téma opozice v Ázerbájdžánu je dnes opomíjeným, ale velmi závažným problémem. Režim prezidenta Ilhama Aliyeva čím dál více utvrzuje svou moc a opozice je prvním cílem jeho represí. Ázerbájdžán je v práci identifikován na Linzově ose nedemokratických režimů. Současný režim Ilhama Aliyeva používá velké spektrum represivních metod k potlačení opozice, ačkoli mezinárodní závazky podobné praktiky zakazují. Opoziční scéna v Ázerbájdžánu vychází z mnoha konfliktních zájmů a hodnot a má proto různé formy, ideová zakotvení i metody boje o moc. Specifika opozice v Ázerbájdžánu jsou v přítomnosti klanových struktur a dále vlivů ze zahraničí, které přinášejí do země mimo jiné islámské opoziční skupiny. Významná je také opoziční struktura, která v režimu vytváří zdání pluralismu a legitimizuje tím stávající režim. Cílem je zmapovat všechny opoziční skupiny podle typologie opozice v nedemokratických režimech Juana J. Linze.

Abstract:

The issue of the opposition in Azerbaijan is rather neglected these days, even though it poses a very severe problem. The regime of president Ilham Aliyev is more and more tightening its power and the opposition is the first group to be repressed. In this thesis, Azerbaijan is classified according to the Linz´s axes of non-democratic regimes. The contemporary Aliyev´s regime uses a wide range of repressive methods to limit the opposition, although international committments forbid them. The oppositional stakeholders in Azerbaijan are coming from numerous conflictual values and interests. The specificities of the non-democratic regime in Azerbaijan stem from the presence of the clan structures and foreign factors coming from abroad, which bring the islamic oppositional influences with them. There are also important oppositional structures creating the semblance of pluralism and hereby legitimizing the current regime. The aim of this thesis is to map all of the oppositional groups according to the typology of the opposition in non-democratic regimes designed by Juan J. Linz.
