Analysis of smart home user interface controls

Abstract:

Chytrá domácnost je rozvíjejícím se trendem posledního desetiletí. S nárůstem počtu zařízení pro chytré domácnosti přichází výzva navrhnout ovládací prvky tak, aby bylo možné intuitivně ovládat všechny produkty na jednom místě. Tato práce se zabývá definicí a podrobným popisem konceptu chytré domácnosti. Dále se zaměřuje na analýzu několika klíčových technologií, které jsou aktuálně využívány pro ovládání chytrých domácností, mezi něž patří Home Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa a Samsung SmartThings. Hlavním cílem práce bylo navrhnout nové uživatelské rozhraní, které je konzistentní, vizuálně přitažlivé a intuitivní pro ovládání. Pro návrh jednotlivých prvků byla využita aplikace Figma. Bylo provedeno testování celého prototypu a porovnání návrhů s existujícími technologiemi, které byly představeny v teoretické části práce. Celkové výsledky byly velmi pozitivní, autorův návrh se umístil na druhém místě v porovnání jednotlivých komponent ovládacích prvků z hlediska vizuální přitažlivosti a jednoduchosti ovládání. V uživatelském testování ovládacích prvků se nejvíce respondentů vyjádřilo pro autorův návrh z hlediska konzistence, přehlednosti a atraktivity.

Abstract:

The smart home is an emerging trend of the last decade. With the increasing number of smart home devices comes the challenge of designing controls for intuitive control all products in one place. This paper deals with the definition and detailed description of the smart home concept. It also focuses on the analysis of several key technologies that are currently used to control smart homes including Home Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings. The main objective of the work was to design a new user interface that is consistent, visually appealing and intuitive to use. Figma was used to design the individual elements. Testing of the entire prototype was conducted and the designs were compared with existing technologies that were presented in the theoretical part of the thesis. The overall results were very positive, the author's design ranked second in the comparison of the individual components of the controls in terms of visual appeal and ease of use. In the user testing of the controls, most respondents expressed their preference for the author's design in terms of consistency, clarity and attractiveness.
