Theatrical aspects in the celebrations of May, 1st in Czechoslovakia, 1948-1952

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se věnuje teatralitě nejmasovějších oslav komunistického režimu v ČSR. Konkrétně jde o analýzu svátku Prvního máje v letech 1948 až 1952. Úvodní část práce je věnována historii Svátku práce. V analytické části práce je nejprve analyzován První máj v roce 1948 následně pak v samostatné kapitole oslavy v letech 1949 až 1952. U těchto kulturních performancí jsou analyzovány jednotlivé teatrální prvky s využitím interdisciplinárních přístupů sociologie a sociokulturní antropologie, zejména metodiky Jeffreyho Alexandera. Vzhledem k tomu, že nelze oslavy Svátku práce ve zkoumaném období oddělit od totální masové propagandy, je poslední kapitola věnována právě propagandistické performanci. Pro poúnorový režim měly oslavy Svátku práce klíčový význam, prostřednictvím těchto kulturních performancí komunistická moc upevňovala svoji pozici ve státě a pokoušela se legitimizovat existenci totalitárního systému.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with mass festivities of the Communist regime in ČSR and its theatrical aspects. It focuses on the 1st May celebrations during 1948 and 1952. While the opening chapters deal with the history of 1st May, the analytical part is devoted to its celebrations in 1948; one more chapter, then, introduces its picture in 1949-52. I primarily analyze individual theatrical aspects of these cultural performances while using interdisciplinary methods: sociology and social anthropology, mainly the tools introduced by Jeffrey Alexander. These festivities cannot be separated from other mass festivities, therefore the last chapter speaks about performance and propaganda. The fetivities in question were of high importance after 1948 and helped to strengten the power of state as well as the legitimity of the totalitarian regime.
