The Black Square, Malevich and the Invention of the Icon

Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je Černý čtverec od Kazimira Maleviče, který je představen v rámci zvýšeného kulturního zájmu o ruské “ikony”. Rok 1913, který Malevič označuje za dobu vzniku malby, byl poznamenána dvěma událostmi. Zatímco výstava ruských ikon pořádána v rámci oslavy třístého výročí Romanovské dynastie pohlížela do minulosti, futuristická opera Vítězství nad sluncem představovala budoucnost. Toto setkání se nachází i v tvorbě avantgardních umělců Natálie Goncharové a Vladimíra Tatlina, kteří ve svých moderních dílech adoptují vizuální prvky svatých obrazů. Na základě představení teologických statí, matematických teorií a politických tendencí té doby, zkoumám kontext, který vedl Maleviče k vystavení Černého čtverce ve “svatém koutu” na výstavě 0,10.

Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor's thesis is the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich, which is introduced in the context of the increased cultural interest in Russian "icons". The year 1913, which Malevich describes as the time when the painting was created, was marked by two events. While the exhibition of Russian icons organized to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Romanov dynasty looked to the past, the futuristic opera Victory over the Sun represented the future. This meeting is also found in the work of avant-garde artists Natalie Goncharova and Vladimir Tatlin, who adopt the visual elements of holy images in their modern works. Based on the presentation of theological articles, mathematical theories and political tendencies of the time, I examine the context that led Malevich to exhibit the Black Square in the “icon corner” at the 0.10 exhibition.
