Great Britain and the Persian Gulf region - engagement of power in postcolonial period

Abstract:

Tématem mé bakalářské práce je "Velká Británie a region Perského zálivu - angažmá mocnosti v postkoloniálním období. Politický vývoj v oblasti Perského zálivu byl v koloniálním období ovlivněn zejména Velkou Británií. Avšak po druhé světové válce, v období dekolonizace, Spojené království opustilo své výsostné postavení v oblasti Zálivu. Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na analýzu role Velké Británie v několika státech Zálivu (Bahrajnu, Kuvajtu, Ománu, Kataru a Spojených arabských emirátů) v postkoloniálním období (od roku 1971). V práci se snažím zjistit v jakých oblastech a do jaké míry se Velké Británii povedlo udržet si svůj vliv z koloniálního období. Teoretická část bakalářské práce se zabývá koncepty mezinárodního právo, jako je například režim protektorátu nebo kolonie. Dále charakterizuje základní typologii protektorátu pojednává o jeho klíčových znacích. Analytická část bakalářské práce analyzuje zahraniční politiku Velké Británie, kterou používala vůči vybraným státům Perského zálivu v koloniálním a postkoloniálním období. Zabývá se vývojem angažmá Velké Británie v koloniálním období a analyzuje roli Spojeného království v postkoloniálním období. Analýza zahraniční politiky Velké Británie v postkoloniálním období se zaměřuje na 3 rozdílné oblasti, vojenskou, ekonomickou a politicko-kulturní. Výsledky analýzy jsou shrnuty v závěru práce.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor thesis is "Great Britain and the Persian Gulf region engagement of power in the postcolonial era". Political development in the Persian Gulf was heavily influenced by Great Britain during the colonial period of time. But after the World War II in the era of decolonization, the United Kingdom has left its privileged position in the Gulf. This bachelor thesis tries to analyze the role of the UK in several Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates) in postcolonial era, which means since 1971 and attempts to identify areas in which areas Great Britain has been able to partially maintain its influence from the colonial period. Theoretical base of this thesis is provided by relevant concepts of international law. The emphasis in the theoretical part of the thesis is given to the concept of protectorate and colony. It also introduces and further discusses the fundamental features of regime of protectorate, its typology and differences between protectorates and colonies. The thesis also provides theoretical background for understanding of terms colonialism and neocolonialism. The second part of the thesis analyzes the foreign policy of Great Britain which applied against selected Gulf states in the colonial and postcolonial periods. Analytical part of the thesis examines the history of British engagement in the Persian Gulf region and analyses the role of the United Kingdom in postcolonial era. The analysis of postcolonial era contains studies of three different areas of British involvement, military, economic and political-cultural. The results of this analysis are then summarized in the conclusion, the third part of the thesis.
