The perception of music by cochlear implants users

Abstract:

Úvod: V dnešní době vnímání hudby hraje jednu z klíčových roli v životě každého člověka. Kochleární implantát dává možnost lidem s hluchotou a sluchovými potížemi obnovit svoje sluchové schopnosti a rozvinout řečové dovednosti při následné rehabilitaci. Hudba je souborem tónů nástrojů, mužského a ženského zpěvu, a neodmyslitelně patří k životu moderního člověka. Ve své bakalářské práci jsem se chtěl dozvědět, jak zní hudba jako komplex zvuků a zpěvu pro lidi s kochleárním implantátem. Teoretická část: V teoretické části mé bakalářské práce je popsána stavba kochleárního implantátu, popis předoperační přípravy pacienta, proces implantace a průběh pooperační rehabilitace. Praktická část: K účasti v praktické části bakalářské práce se prohlásilo 5 dobrovolníků s kochleárními implantáty. Pro získávání dat byly mnou vytvořené speciální dotazník a diagram pro posouzení, jak pro každého z účastníků zní vybrána hudební kompozice, včetně zpěvu a hudebních nástrojů. Pro provedení analýzy byly zvolené 4 skladby různých žánrů, ve kterých jsou používané různé nástroje, mužský a ženský zpěv. Po obdržení dat z formulářů a diagramů pro každou skladbu, jsme dokázali zjistit, který hudební nástroj je lépe rozpoznatelný, který žánr je vnímán lépe nebo hůř pro lidi používající kochleární implantát. Závěr: Po provedení měření můžeme říct, které hudební žánry z vybraných čtyř jsou pro lidi s kochleárními implantáty více či méně pochopitelné, který hudební nástroj zní zřetelně a který způsobil účastníkům studie problémy. Kromě toho jsme schopny popsat, jaké emoce účastníci studie získávají při poslechu hudby doma, na koncertech, událostech a jaké emoce měli účastníci, když poslouchali hudbu, kterou jsem vybral.

Abstract:

Introduction: Nowadays the perception of sound plays a key role in every person’s life. For instance, music as a combination of sounds of different instruments or as someone’s singing appears is an integral part of modern life. A cochlear implant, in that case, has been created to provide the ability to renew auditory abilities of death people and develop their speech abilities with further rehabilitation. Thus in my bachelor thesis, I wanted to learn how people with cochlear implants perceive music as a complex of sounds and voices. Theoretical part: The theoretical part describes the structure of the cochlear implant and the process of preparation for the operation. Furthermore, provide information about the implantation procedure itself and about the postoperative rehabilitation process. Practical part: First, in order to complete the stated task, 5 volunteers with cochlear implants were found. Furthermore, to obtain the data, I compiled a special form and chart to assess how each participant hear different sounds of musical composition, including singing and musical instruments. Subsequently, were made measurements of how people with cochlear implants perceive musical instruments, singing, and rhythm in particular. So 4 compositions of different genres were chosen for that reason, in which different instruments and voices are found. Finally, after receiving data from the form and diagram for each composition, we were able to find out which musical instrument is more recognizable, which genre is perceived better / worse for those who use a cochlear implant. Conclusion: Overall, after conducted measurements, we can tell which put of 4 musical genres is more or less clear for people with a cochlear implant, which musical instrument sounds distinctly, and moreover which caused problems for the study participants, what emotions the study participants receive from listening to music at home, on concerts, events and especially what emotions the participants had when listening to the music I selected.
