Peníze jsou základem ekonomiky celého světa již stovky let. Jejich vytváření a uvádění do oběhu patřilo i v minulosti mezi nejvýznamnější činnosti států, nebo jiných celků. Od roku 1519 až do roku 1918 probíhaly na území dnešní České republiky významné procesy při tvorbě měny, počátek tolarové ražby, přechod na měnu konvenční a později na kreditní peníze.
