Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá motivem nemoci v díle Charlese Dickense. Úvodní část stručně popisuje viktoriánskou dobu a odhaluje důvody k psaní této práce. Objasňuje, jak viktoriánské nemoci souvisejí dnešní dobou. První kapitola zkoumá nemoc jako metaforu napříč různými literárními směry. Kniha Susan Sontagové se stala inspirací pro toto téma. Následuje průzkum nemocí typických pro viktoriánskou dobu. Druhá kapitola zahrnuje popis příznaků a léčby těchto nemocí, a také se zaměřuje se na historické pozadí, neboť viktoriánští spisovatelé se obracejí ke kritice společnosti a popisu aktuálních společenských jevů, zejména nemoci. Toto období bylo typické nárůstem počtu případů rozšířených přenosných nemocí kvůli stoupajícímu počtu obyvatestva ve městech. Závěrečná kapitola se zaměřuje na jednotlivé postavy díla stižené nemocí. Cílem je identifikovat nemoc a zhodnotit, jakou funkci sehrává v dílech Charlese Dickense. Závěr práce obsahuje shrnutí všech zjištění.

Abstract:

This thesis considers the motif of disease in the novels of Charles Dickens. The introduction reveals reasons for writing this thesis along with a brief description of the Victorian era. It also reveals some information connecting the Victorian era diseases with our modern world. The first chapter examines the role of disease as a metaphor being used in literature in general. The theme is based on Susan Sontag’s work Illness as Metaphor. This is followed by a survey on diseases typical of the Victorian Era. The second chapter includes facts about the symptoms and treatments. It also studies the historical background. Victorian writers turn to social criticism and description of social actualities, namely disease, as this era sees a rise in widespread and transmissible disease due to growing population in cities. The final chapter examines particular characters in Dickens who came down with an illness. The aim is to identify the disease and evaluate its function within the novel. In conclusion, all the findings are summarised in the last chapter.
