Differences between phonological awareness and written expression relationships in children with typical writing development and dysgraphia

Abstract:

Úvod: Pojetí vývojové dysgrafie se napříč odbornou literaturou liší. Někdy je vnímána jako porucha jemné motoriky (české pojetí), jindy jako porucha hláskování, gramatiky a organizace myšlenek v textu anebo se nerozlišuje od dyslexie (zahraniční pojetí). Od rozdílného vnímání se odvíjí i nesoulad, zda se vývojová dysgrafie pojí s narušením fonologického povědomí či nikoliv. V zahraničí je dysgrafie s deficitem fonologických schopností spojována. V české poradenské praxi se ale ukazuje, že to nemusí být nutným pravidlem. Cílem práce je nesoulad prozkoumat. Metody: Výzkumný soubor zahrnoval 88 žáků třetích a čtvrtých tříd a byly použity subtesty metod BACH a DIB, anamnestické údaje a objektivní záznam online písma s využitím digitalizačního tabletu a softwaru HandACQUS. Výsledky: Děti s vývojovou dysgrafií mají horší výkon ve fonologické manipulaci a více chybují v diktátu a přepisu než intaktní děti, neliší se ve fonologické kompetenci. Fonologická manipulace souvisí s chybovostí v diktátu (r = - ,4, p <,001) a přepisu (r = - ,28, p = ,01). Vztah fonologické kompetence s chybovostí v diktátu a přepisu nebyl nalezen. Z 11 motorických komponent psaní (parametry online písma) pouze 3 korelují s chybovostí v diktátu [dlouhá doba psaní (r = ,4, p = ,02), neschopnost provádět delší tahy (r = ,42, p = ,01), všechna písmena mají stejnou výšku (r = - ,58, p <,001)] a 2 s chybovostí v přepisu [všechna písmena mají stejnou výšku (r = - ,48, p <,001), časté přepisování (r = - ,33, p = ,05)]. Diskuze: Práce nabízí interpretaci, že nedostatečně osvojená schopnost psaní může souviset s narušením typického vývoje fonologické manipulace. Zároveň výsledky implikují relativní nezávislost motoriky na schopnostech fonologického povědomí. Tudíž je možné, že deficity fonologických schopností a vyšší chybovost v diktátu a přepisu nemusí být primárním projevem dysgrafie.

Abstract:

Introduction: The definition of developmental dysgraphia differs throughout the literature. Sometimes it is defined as a disorder of fine motor skills (Czech definition), other times it is characterized by problems with spelling, grammar, and organization of ideas in text, or it is included in the definition of dyslexia (foreign definition). This inconsistency in definitions results in controversy about whether developmental dysgraphia is associated with impaired phonological awareness (PA) or not. Abroad, dysgraphia is associated with a deficit of phonological abilities however, it turns out that this may be an uncommon symptom in Czech counseling practices. The aim of this study is to research the discrepancies between foreign literature and Czech counseling practices. Methods: The sample size was 88 children attending third and fourth grade at a primary school. This study uses subtests of methods BACH, DIB, anamnestic data and objective recording of online handwriting using a digitizing tablet and software HandACQUS. Results: Children with developmental dysgraphia have worse performance in phonological manipulation (PM) and make more specific mistakes in dictation and transcription than intact children. They do not differ in phonological competence (PC). FM is related to the rate of error in dictation (r = - .4, p < .001) and transcription (r = - .28, p = .01). The relation between PC and the rate of error in dictation or transcription was not found. Only three of the 11 fine motor skills of handwriting (parameters of online writing) correlate with the rate of error in dictation [long writing time (r = .4, p = .02), inability to make longer strokes (r = .42, p = .01), all letters have the same height (r = - .58, p < .001.)]. Two of the 11 motor components of writing correlate with error rate in transcription [all letters have the same height (r = - .48, p < .001.), frequent overwriting (r = - .33, p = .05)]. Discussion: The results offer an interpretation that insufficiently acquired writing ability may be related to a disruption of the typical development of PM. Simultaneously, the research implies the relative independence of motor skills from the abilities of PA. Thus, it is possible that deficits in PA and the higher rate of error may not be primary symptoms of dysgraphia
