Bridges and misunderstandings: at the intersection of art, design and science, through the parallel sonification of textual data of a work in two languages

Anotace:

Tato magisterská závěrečná práce se zaměřuje na problematiku sonifikace textových dat. Popisujeme zde konstrukci experimentálního nástroje skrze design research metodologii, přičemž pomocí tohoto nástroje aplikujeme sonifikační metodu earkonů, audifikace a sonifikace mapováním parametrů na dva textové datasety. Tyto datasety jsou sonifikované paralelně jako souběžná sonifikace. Skrze tzv. screwmeneutics přístup aplikujeme sonifikační metodu na rozložení písmen, analýzu sentimentu a fonosémantiku. Taktéž použijeme sonifikaci jakožto teoretický objekt. Na základě pozitivních výsledků i potenciálu navrhujeme zasadit nástroj do prostředí laboratoře digitálních humanitních věd a provést sérii experimentů.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the problem of text data sonification. We describe the construction of an experimental tool through design research methodology. This tool applies the sonification methods of earcons, audification, and parameter mapping sonification to two text datasets. These datasets are then sonified in parallel as a concurrent sonification. Taking a screwmeneutic attitude, we apply the sonification method for letters, sentiment analysis, and phonosemantics. We use sonification as a theoretical object too. Based on the overall positive outcome and discussed potential, we suggest setting up the tool in the digital humanities lab and conducting a series of experiments for further research.
