Towards Prediction and Recommendation in Higher Education

Abstract:

Každý semestr si studenti musí vybrat předměty, které budou studovat. Hlavním cílem této práce je zanalyzovat jejich chování, abychom byli schopni spolehlivě předvídat jejich úspěšnost. K dosažení tohoto cíle jsme použili různé techniky dolování výukových dat. Z univerzitního systému jsme extrahovali data, která reprezentují sociální chování studentů. Prokázali jsme, že tento typ dat výrazně zvyšuje úspěšnost předpovědí. Dále jsme využili techniky často používané v doporučovacích systémech a na základě podobnosti studentů jsme předpovídali jejich známky. Zjistili jsme, že stačí uvažovat pouze hodnocení ze 3 příbuzných předmětů, abychom byli schopni poměrně dobře odhadnout známku ze zkoumaného předmětu. Menší část této práce je věnována doporučování předmětů. Zanalyzovali jsme požadavky, které jsou kladeny na studenty k získání titulu. Navrhli jsme také několik algoritmů, které studentům doporučují předměty. Ověřili jsme, že studenti preferují jednodušší povinně volitelné předměty. Co se týká volitelných předmětů, i jednodušší algoritmy, které předměty vybírají na základě oblíbenosti učitele nebo jsou často zapisovány jejich spolužáky, byly úspěšné. Ověřili jsme použitelnost a vhodnost algoritmů na datech pocházejících z Fakulty informatiky Masarykovy univerzity. Navržené techniky jsou však obecné a lze je využít na kterékoliv fakultě či univerzitě. Na základě získaných znalostí jsme byli schopni vytvořit doporučovací systém, který studentům pomůže při výběru předmětů. Systém nabízí studentům předměty s ohledem na studentovy dovednosti, znalosti a zájmy. Vybírá také pouze předměty, které jim nevytváří konflikty v rozvrhu. Upozorňuje na předměty, na které by si studenti měli dávat pozor a připomíná jim povinnosti, které musí splnit. V budoucnu plánujeme zveřejnit systém jako součást Informačního systému Masarykovy univerzity.

Abstract:

One of the main problems the university students are facing is to create and manage the semester course plan. The main aim of this thesis is to analyse students’ behaviour in order to reliable predict the student performance. To achieve this goal, we utilized different data mining techniques. We extracted data about students social behaviour from the university information system and proved their positive effect to the student performance prediction. We also utilized techniques used in recommender systems to predict students’ final grades based on the previous achievements of similar students. We verified that we were able to predict the results considering data from only 3 related courses. The smaller part of this thesis is dedicated to the course recommendation. We inspected the requirements that students must meet to obtain the university degree. We also designed several recommendation algorithms that selected courses for students. We found out that students preferred easier selective courses and simpler algorithms based on computations of favourite teacher or courses enrolled by friends were almost as successful as the algorithm based on similarities of students’ enrolments. We evaluated the usability of all designed methods by analysing real-world data obtained from the Faculty of Informatics of the Masaryk University. The proposed methods are rather general and can be utilized on other faculties or universities as well. Based on these analyses, we are able to design a course recommender system that mainly helps with students’ enrolment decisions. To summarize, it can provide recommendation of selective and optional courses with respect to students’ skills, knowledge, interests and free time slots in their timetables. The system can also warn students against difficult courses and remind them mandatory study duties. The future work is to deploy the system as a part of the Information System of the Masaryk University.
