Yankeedom and Tidewater: the Two Nations and their Influence on Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce čerpá z konceptu jedenácti různých národů, jež lze nalézt ve Spojených státech amerických, z těchto národů pak analyzuje dva, které vznikly v 17. století v koloniální Americe – Yankeedom a Tidewater, a nakonec zkoumá, jak se příslušnost k daným národům odráží v dílech spisovatelů Nathaniela Hawthorna a Edgara Allana Poea. Kapitola „Založení Yankeedom a Tidewater“ je rozdělena do dvou podkapitol, které poskytují teoretický podklad pro analýzu provedenou v kapitole třetí. Diskuze v první kapitole se soustředí na důvody, které stály za migrací Angličanů do Nového světa a na ideje, na nichž jsou tyto dva národy založeny. Pozornost je upřena zejména na náboženskou víru, sociální stratifikaci, ekonomický rozvoj, správu kolonie a každodenní život a v rámci popisu prvních desetiletí po založení kolonie pak kapitola pozoruje, jak se národy vyvíjely. Druhá kapitola diplomové práce, „Historie Yankeedom a Tidewater“, zkoumá díla, jež byla napsána muži, kteří byli přímými svědky vzniku těchto národů. History of New England from 1630 to 1649, původně zamýšlená jako deník Johna Winthropa, popisuje jeho vlastní zkušenosti z kolonie, a to zejména co se týče její správy a spolupráce moci státní a duchovní. Dílo Generall Historie od Johna Smitha pak představuje osídlení v Tidewater s ohledem na každodenní život, jeho těžkosti a nepředvídatelnost. Poslední část práce je navržena jako případová studie a nazývá se „Hawthorne a Poe ve spojení s Yankeedom a Tidewater“. Podstatou této kapitoly je analýza románu The House of the Seven Gables a povídky The Fall of the House of Usher, kdy důraz je kladen na šest témat, jež se v určité podobě objevují i v předchozích kapitolách. Pomocí rozboru, jenž se nedívá na tato díla jako na gotickou fikci, ale zdůrazňuje národnost autorů, charakteristiky a zásadní ideály národů Yankeedom a Tidewater, je pak možné ustanovit spojení mezi těmito dvěma autory a národy, z nichž pochází. Toto spojení je evidentní nejenom s ohledem na prostředí a čas, v němž se děj odehrává, při popisu společenské hierarchie, minulosti postav nebo na konceptu rodiny, ale také se odráží na výběru tématu, stylu psaní a morálního vyústění příběhu.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to draw on the concept of eleven distinct nations recognized within the United States, analyze the two of them dating back to the 17th-century colonial America – Yankeedom and Tidewater, and examine how the nationality of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe, writers belonging, respectively, to these particular nations, is manifested in their work. The chapter “Founding Yankeedom and Tidewater” is divided into two sub-chapters that provide a theoretical background to the analysis performed in chapter 3. It discusses the reasons that stood behind the English migration to the New World and the different founding ideals of the colonist. Focusing on their religious beliefs, social stratification, economic development, administration of the colony and everyday life, this chapter describes the first decades following the colony’s foundation and observes how the nations had been developing. Second part of the thesis, “Histories of Yankeedom and Tidewater”, examines works written by two men who witnessed their foundation. History of New England from 1630 to 1649, originally devised as a journal of John Winthrop, provides a first-hand experience, mainly with the colony’s administration and cooperation of the state and the church. The Generall Historie by John Smith describes the Tidewater settlement with emphasis on everyday life, its difficulties and unpredictability. The last part of this thesis is designed as a case study and is called “Hawthorne and Poe in Connection to Yankeedom and Tidewater”. The scope of this chapter is to discuss The House of the Seven Gables and The Fall of the House of Usher while focusing on six main topics that are to a certain extent reflected in the previous chapters as well. Through the analysis that does not approach these writings as works of Gothic fiction but emphasizes the nationality of their authors and the characteristics and ideals integral to Yankeedom and Tidewater, it is possible to establish a connection between the particular author and the nation he belongs to. Not only is this connection visible in the setting of the work, description of the social hierarchy, historical background of the characters or the concept of family but also in the selection of the topic, writing style and in the moral of the story.
