Dealing with the past in the Czech and Polish post-war cinema

Abstract:

Ve středu zájmu této studie stojí problematika vyrovnávání se s vlastní minulostí. Toto téma je podstatné pro každou společnost, která si prošla totalitní minulostí. Prostor střední Evropy je determinován cyklickými dějinnými zvraty, proto byl zvolen příklad Československa a Polska. Prostředníkem se světem minulosti je pro každou společnost její kolektivní paměť, která se významně vtišťuje do kulturních produktů. Důležitým uměleckým odvětvím se v období 20. století stal film. Reflexe vlastní minulosti byla proto konána na základě zobrazení dějinných procesů ve 20. století v české a polské poválečné kinematografii. Je potřeba zdůraznit, že byla realizována z české perspektivy. Jelikož je sledovaná problematika velice rozsáhlá a aby bylo dosaženo validních výsledků, byla věnována velká pozornost také popisu poválečné historie obou zemí a vývoji jejich kinematografií. Důležitými zdroji této práce jsou mimo konkrétních filmů, též prameny z oboru filmové vědy. Při zpracování tohoto předmětu, byly využity metody analýzy filmů, komparace zjištěných výsledků a jejich následná interpretace. Jádrem zkoumání byl způsob vyobrazení historických aspektů konkrétních filmových děl, reprezentujících dané segmenty poválečných dějin. Jejich věrohodnost byla konfrontována se stávajícím historiografickým poznáním. Srovnáním zobrazování minulosti prostřednictvím filmu v obou sledovaných zemích bylo dosaženo několika zajímavých zjištění. Především byla vymezena jistá typologie zobrazení, která je závislá nejen na autorské invenci, ale pochopitelně také na stavu politického klimatu konkrétní země v konkrétním časovém období. Odlišnosti jsou závislé na kulturní tradici dané země, přičemž jak polská, tak česká tvorba má výrazná specifika. Vzhledem k tomu, že minulost je latentně stále přítomná v naší současnosti, lze obecně hovořit o velké míře potenciálu, kterým daná problematika disponuje a proto, je perspektiva možností studia velice široká.

Abstract:

The focus of this study is the issue of dealing with the past. This topic is essential for any society that has undergone a totalitarian past. The area of Central Europe is determined by cyclical historical reversals, therefore the example of Czechoslovakia and Poland was chosen. The mediator with the world of past for each society is the collective memory, which significantly imprints in cultural products. In the 20th century the film became an important artistic industry. The reflection of its own history was therefore done on the basis of view of historical processes in the 20th century in the Czech and Polish post-war cinematography. It should be emphasized that it was realized from the Czech perspective. As the issue is very extensive, and in order to achieve valid results, great attention, was also paid to description of the post-war history of the two countries and the development of their cinematography. Beyond the specific films, also the springs from the field of film science are important sources of this thesis. During processing this subject, methods of film analysis, comparison of the obtained results and their subsequent interpretation were used. The way of displaying of the historical aspects of a specific film works, which represents given segments of post-war history, was in the centre of this research. Their credibility was confronted with the existing historiographical knowledge. By comparing displaying of the past through film in both reference countries, several interesting findings have been achieved. Above all, a certain typology of view, was defined, which is dependent not only on the author's invention, but naturally also on the state of political climate of a specific country in a given time period. The differences depend on the cultural traditions of the country, with both Polish and Czech films having a distinctive specifics. Whereas the past is still latently present today, we can generally speak about great deal of potential of a given issue and therefore the perspective of studying possibilities of learning opportunities is very wide.
