The Roots of Hatred between the Islamic and Western Worlds

Abstract:

Vztahy mezi islámským a západním světem jsou v kontextu specifických událostí i komplexních vazeb patrně jedním z nejdiskutovanějších témat dnešní doby, jak na úrovni akademiků, tak i médií a veřejnosti. Diplomová práce si klade za cíl zkoumat, zda existují z psychologického hlediska důvody k nenávisti mezi islámským a západním světem, či zda jde jen o příhodnou redefinici studeno-válečného paradigmatu souboje Východu a Západu. Práce za užití kombinace historické a psychologické analýzy, dochází k závěru, že islámský svět si s sebou nese křivdy související s křížovými výpravami, zánikem islámské dominance, kolonizací a historickým i novodobým vykořisťováním. Velkým motivem k nenávisti je i strach z ohrožení morálních hodnot islámské kultury. V západním světě je naopak cestou k nenávisti především strach z kulturní odlišnosti, z ohrožení hodnot, ale i strach z islámského radikalismu či ohrožení životů a existence Západu v podobě, v jaké ho známe.

Abstract:

Relations between the Islamic and Western worlds are in the context of both specific events and complex links one of the most debated topics of today's world.The aim of this thesis is to examine the potential existence of the reasons for hatred between the Islamic and Western worlds and evaluate whether it is not just a simple redefinition of the Cold War paradigm. The thesis combines historical and psychological analysis and concludes that the Islamic world is highly influenced by the grievances from its colonial past, the Crusades, the decline of Islamic dominance and both historical and current exploitation. One of the roots of the Islamic hatred is considered to be the threats to Islamic moral values. The main reasons for the Western hatred are rather the fear of Islamic radicalism or cultural differences.
